Blizzard Finally Addresses Sargeras' Sword in WoW Midnight Patch 12.2 Eclipse

World of Warcraft players have been making the same joke for years: there is still a gigantic sword sticking out of Azeroth.

Now Blizzard has finally made it clear that the joke is about to become relevant again.

During a joint Blizzard interview conducted by Icy Veins, Raider.IO and Wowhead at BlizzCon 2026, Associate Game Director Paul Kubit and Senior Game Designer Kim Flack discussed the story of Midnight: Eclipse, the Worldsoul and one particularly hard-to-ignore piece of unfinished business in Silithus.

Yes, Blizzard remembers Sargeras' sword.

And according to Kubit, Patch 12.2: Eclipse should make that very obvious.

Quick answer:
Blizzard confirmed that Sargeras' sword narrowly missed Azeroth's Worldsoul and that Patch 12.2: Eclipse will address the blade directly. Blizzard has not revealed whether the sword will be removed, destroyed, moved or used for something else.

  • Is Azeroth fighting back? — What Blizzard said: Yes. — What it means: The interview says Xal'atath has reached the Worldsoul, but the Worldsoul is resisting.
  • Where does Eclipse take us? — What Blizzard said: The Mantle Vault and the Worldcore. — What it means: Players go deeper beneath Azeroth than ever before, putting the Sword and Worldsoul in the same story space.

Blizzard Confirms the Sword Narrowly Missed the Worldsoul

The most important new detail from the interview is surprisingly simple: Sargeras did not actually impale Azeroth's Worldsoul.

Kubit confirmed that the sword came extremely close, but missed. That matters because recent Eclipse imagery had already caused players to look at the geometry of the blade, the Mantle Vault and the Worldsoul more carefully.

For years, the Sword has mostly been treated as the enormous scar left behind at the end of Legion. We dealt with the immediate corruption around it, drained the power of our Artifact weapons into the wound and then moved on to Battle for Azeroth.

The physical blade, however, never went anywhere.

Patch 12.2 appears ready to turn that old environmental landmark back into an active piece of the story.

Blizzard Says It Has Not Forgotten About the Sword

Kubit did not explain exactly what happens to the Sword in Eclipse, but his wording is important. According to the joint interview, it should become very clear during Patch 12.2 that Blizzard has not forgotten about it.

That is about as direct an answer as Blizzard can give without spoiling the campaign.

The interesting part is what the developers did not say. There is still no confirmation that the Sword is being removed from Silithus. Blizzard also did not say it will be destroyed, purified, pulled out of Azeroth or turned into a weapon.

For the moment, all of those ideas remain theories.

What is confirmed is that the giant blade is no longer just background scenery.

Why the Near-Miss Could Matter

Icy Veins' summary of the interview notes that Sargeras' failure to strike the Worldsoul directly may be framed as a sign of the Worldsoul's own power.

That is an intriguing possibility, but it is worth keeping the distinction clear: Blizzard confirmed the near-miss; it did not fully explain why the sword missed.

The same interview gives us another piece of context. Xal'atath has now reached the Worldsoul, but the Worldsoul is fighting back.

That makes the positioning of Sargeras' blade more interesting than it was during Battle for Azeroth. We are no longer talking about Azeroth as an abstract wounded planet. Midnight is bringing players physically closer to the Worldsoul, while the Worldsoul herself appears to be acting against the threats reaching her.

A blade that nearly reached her eight years ago suddenly feels much less like forgotten scenery.

The Sword Has Been in Silithus Since the End of Legion

Sargeras plunged the blade into Azeroth as his final act before the Pantheon imprisoned him at the end of Legion.

The strike devastated Silithus and caused Azerite to begin emerging from the wounded world. Blizzard's own Battle for Azeroth material described the event as a grievous wound to Azeroth, and players used the power stored in their Artifact weapons to stabilize the corruption around the blade.

That story became the foundation for Battle for Azeroth.

But stabilizing a wound is not the same thing as removing the object that caused it.

The Sword remained embedded in Silithus through Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, Dragonflight, The War Within and into Midnight. At this point, it is probably the largest unresolved object in World of Warcraft - literally and narratively.

Patch 12.2 Eclipse Is the Perfect Time to Bring the Sword Back

The timing makes sense because Eclipse is moving the story toward the deepest parts of Azeroth.

Blizzard's official Patch 12.2 overview says players will travel through the Mantle Vault on the road to the Worldcore, going deeper beneath Azeroth than ever before. The Worldcore raid then places us directly in the conflict between Xal'atath, the Void and the Worldsoul.

In other words, we are finally entering the part of the planet where Sargeras was trying to strike.

That makes it difficult to imagine the story ignoring a Titan-sized sword sitting above us.

Whether the blade becomes a danger, a tool, a doorway, a source of power or something completely different is still unknown. But Eclipse is the first patch in years where its existence naturally intersects with the main plot.

Could the Sword Be Connected to the Worldcore Raid?

Blizzard has not confirmed a direct gameplay connection between Sargeras' sword and the Worldcore raid.

What we do know is that the raid contains eight bosses and ends with Xal'atath. The official Eclipse reveal describes the Worldcore as the point where her plans around the Worldsoul finally come into the open.

The joint interview also hints that the story will not simply be a clean sequence of players accomplishing every objective. Blizzard says there are turns coming, and not all of them amount to the heroes completing the mission exactly as planned.

That is why the Sword is worth watching.

A giant Titan weapon, Xal'atath at the Worldsoul, living Azerite, hidden Titan infrastructure and a final raid called the Worldcore are now all part of the same patch. It would be very surprising if those pieces had nothing to do with one another.

Still, until Blizzard shows the campaign or PTR story chapters, any specific connection beyond that remains speculation.

The Worldsoul Is Already Fighting Back Against Xal'atath

The interview also adds an important detail to the situation below Azeroth.

Xal'atath has reached the Worldsoul, but the Worldsoul is not simply waiting to be rescued. Blizzard says she is fighting back, while players are also trying to stop Xal'atath.

That fits with the Radiant Screams feature revealed for Eclipse, where the Worldsoul's cries and visions become increasingly intense as players move through the Mantle Vault.

The story is beginning to treat Azeroth less like a location and more like an active character in the conflict.

If the near-miss of Sargeras' sword is eventually tied to that idea, it could reframe one of the most famous scenes in WoW history. For now, though, Blizzard is keeping that answer for the patch itself.

What Blizzard Has Not Told Us About Sargeras' Sword

The interview answers the biggest question - yes, the Sword matters again - while leaving almost everything else deliberately open.

Blizzard has not confirmed any of the following:

  • whether Sargeras' sword will finally be removed from Silithus;
  • whether the blade will be destroyed or broken;
  • whether players will enter or interact with the Sword directly;
  • whether Xal'atath intends to use the blade;
  • whether the Titans or the Thraegar have a plan for it;
  • whether the sword's position is connected to the Mantle Vault;
  • or whether Silithus itself will receive a major visual update.

That is probably intentional. A direct answer to any of those questions could reveal one of Eclipse's biggest campaign moments.

For now, the safe conclusion is much narrower: the Sword is part of Patch 12.2's story, and Blizzard wants players to notice it.

The Interview Also Revealed New Paladin Story Quests

The Sword was not the only useful detail to come out of the joint Icy Veins, Raider.IO and Wowhead interview.

Patch 12.2 will allow Night Elves, Forsaken and Darkspear Trolls to become Paladins. Blizzard has now confirmed that each of those new race options will receive its own story questline.

The quests are not required to unlock the race-class combination. Instead, they are intended to explain the story of a particular member of that race choosing the Paladin path.

Each new Paladin race will also receive a new Charger mount.

That is a smart way to handle combinations that have generated years of lore arguments. Blizzard is opening the class to more races without pretending that every culture suddenly arrived at the same version of the Silver Hand overnight.

Great Vault Bonus Rolls Could Change in Season 3

The developers also discussed one of Midnight's more controversial gearing decisions: Bonus Rolls in the Great Vault.

Blizzard says its data shows a relatively balanced split at the high end between players choosing gear and choosing Bonus Rolls, while players at the lower end tend to take gear more often.

The problem is not only the percentages.

The team has heard feedback from players who wanted to take an item from the Vault but felt the mathematically correct choice was the Bonus Roll instead. Kubit described that as an uncomfortable tension in the system.

One possible Season 3 solution mentioned in the interview is delaying Bonus Rolls for the first few weeks of the season.

That is not a confirmed change yet, but Blizzard says the feedback around the system will influence Season 3 design.

Why This Matters Going Into The Last Titan

Eclipse is the final major content update of Midnight, and Blizzard has already made it clear that the events in the Worldcore will push the Worldsoul Saga toward The Last Titan.

That gives the return of Sargeras' sword much more weight than a nostalgic callback.

The blade was created by a fallen Titan. It wounded Azeroth. The next expansion is literally called The Last Titan.

Even without inventing a theory about what Blizzard plans to do with it, the thematic connection is impossible to miss.

Midnight is taking us from the Void assault on the surface to the Worldcore itself. The Last Titan then takes the saga into its final chapter. If there was ever a time to resolve the giant piece of Titan weaponry still buried in Azeroth, this is it.

Sargeras' Sword in WoW Midnight FAQ

No. Blizzard says the blade came very close but narrowly missed the Worldsoul.

Will Sargeras' sword be removed in Patch 12.2?

Blizzard has not confirmed that. The developers only confirmed that the Sword will be addressed; its final fate remains unknown.

What patch will deal with Sargeras' sword?

The story is expected to address it in World of Warcraft: Midnight Patch 12.2, titled Eclipse.

Where is Sargeras' sword?

The blade remains embedded in Silithus, where Sargeras struck Azeroth at the end of Legion.

No. Night Elf, Forsaken and Darkspear Troll Paladins will have new story questlines, but Blizzard says those quests are not required to unlock the class option.

Are Great Vault Bonus Rolls changing in Season 3?

Blizzard has not confirmed a final redesign. One option discussed in the interview is delaying Bonus Rolls for the first few weeks of a season.

Final Thoughts

For years, Sargeras' sword has been the easiest unfinished WoW plot point to point at because it is impossible to miss.

It is a colossal Titan blade sticking out of the planet.

Blizzard could leave a forgotten NPC in a cave for ten years and most players would never notice. The Sword does not have that luxury.

Patch 12.2: Eclipse finally seems ready to do something with it.

The confirmed information is still deliberately limited: the blade narrowly missed the Worldsoul, Blizzard has not forgotten it, and Eclipse will make that clear.

Everything beyond that - whether it is removed, used, broken or somehow becomes part of the fight for the Worldcore - is still waiting for the campaign.

And for once, that mystery is probably more interesting than getting the answer in an interview.

After all these years, Silithus may finally be about to change again.
