WoW Midnight Season 2 Class Tuning – August 18 Buffs, Nerfs & Tier Set Changes
Blizzard has announced the first major class-tuning pass for World of Warcraft: Midnight Season 2, and the changes will go live with the August 18 weekly reset.
The biggest theme is not a simple round of buffs and nerfs. Blizzard is specifically targeting several Venomous Abyss tier set bonuses that were projected to overperform once Season 2 begins, while moving some of that power back into the affected specializations' baseline kits.
That approach creates several eye-catching changes: Arcane Mage's 2-piece bonus is being cut from a 20% Arcane Missiles bonus to 5%, Devourer Demon Hunter's 4-piece loses most of its Soul Fragment generation, Discipline Priest loses 30% damage, and Blood Death Knight's San'layn package takes a direct hit.
At the same time, Restoration Druid, Mistweaver Monk, Assassination Rogue, Enhancement Shaman and several other specs are receiving direct throughput buffs.
Below is a complete breakdown of the most important PvE and PvP changes, plus what they may mean for your Season 2 gearing and tier-set plans.
Quick answer:
The August 18 tuning pass mainly reduces overperforming Venomous Abyss tier bonuses while compensating many affected specs with baseline buffs. The most dramatic changes hit Arcane Mage, Devourer Demon Hunter, Discipline Priest, Subtlety Rogue and San'layn Blood DK, while several healers and DPS specs receive direct buffs.

Why Is Blizzard Tuning Classes Before Season 2?
Blizzard says the first week of Curse of Ula'tek gave the team enough information to identify both low and high performers before Season 2 fully begins.
The developers are especially concerned about tier sets. Several Venomous Abyss bonuses were expected to contribute too much of a specialization's total throughput, which would make obtaining the 2-piece or 4-piece bonus feel disproportionately powerful.
Instead of only cutting those bonuses, Blizzard is often increasing baseline ability damage or healing at the same time. The intention is to reduce the gap between a character with and without the new tier set, rather than simply lowering a spec's overall output.
This is why some changes look contradictory at first glance. Frost Death Knight, Arcane Mage, Devourer Demon Hunter, Subtlety Rogue and Fury Warrior all receive baseline buffs while their Season 2 set bonuses are weakened.
Blood Death Knight Nerf – San'layn Takes a Hit
Blood Death Knight is one of the most discussed changes in the first tuning pass, although the nerf is specifically aimed at the San'layn Hero Talent package rather than every Blood DK build.
Visceral Strength will grant 6% Strength instead of 10%, while Transfusion will increase Dancing Rune Weapon damage by 5% instead of 10% according to Blizzard's announced tuning.
Because these are direct reductions rather than a tier-set redistribution, San'layn Blood DK players should expect a real loss in offensive output from the affected effects.
This does not automatically mean Blood DK will become unplayable in Mythic+. Tank rankings depend heavily on survivability, route design, group utility and the actual dungeon pool, but the change is still meaningful for players planning to use San'layn as their primary Season 2 setup.
Frost Death Knight – 9% Buff, But a Much Weaker 2-Set
Frost Death Knight receives a large 9% increase to all ability damage, one of the biggest baseline DPS buffs in the tuning pass.
The tradeoff is a significant nerf to the Venomous Abyss 2-piece bonus. Its attack-speed increase falls from 2% to 1% per stack, while its Icy Death Torrent damage bonus drops from 4% to 2% per stack.
The practical goal is clear: Frost should gain more power from the specialization itself and less from simply equipping the new tier bonus.
Devourer Demon Hunter – Huge Baseline Buff, Huge 4-Set Nerf
Devourer Demon Hunter receives one of the most complicated adjustments in the patch.
Blizzard says the specialization's 4-piece set bonus was performing significantly above expectations, while Devourer itself was also overperforming in single-target combat.
To compensate for the tier-set reduction, all ability damage is increased by 14% in PvE. However, Reap, Cull and Eradicate damage is reduced by 12%. Eradicate's AoE component is increased slightly, from 85% to 90% of base damage, to soften the effect in multi-target situations.
The largest change is the Venomous Abyss 4-set. It will generate only 2 Soul Fragments instead of 8, while the Reap damage bonus falls from 20% to 10%.
That means players should be careful when judging the spec using pre-tuning Season 2 simulations. A significant amount of the projected power was tied to a tier bonus that is now being heavily reduced.
Restoration Druid – Healing and Damage Buffed
Restoration Druid is receiving direct PvE help because Blizzard considers both its healing and damage to be underperforming compared with other healers.
All healing is increased by 4%, while all damage is increased by a much larger 20%. Neither change applies in PvP combat.
The damage increase is especially relevant to Mythic+, where healer DPS can become an important part of high-key optimization. It does not guarantee Restoration will become a top Season 2 healer, but it directly addresses one of the spec's weaker areas.
Beast Mastery Hunter – Venomous Abyss 4-Set Buff
Beast Mastery Hunter is not receiving a broad aura buff. Instead, Blizzard is strengthening the new 4-piece tier bonus because it was weaker than intended.
Cobra Shot will now benefit from Beast Cleave at 30% effectiveness per stack instead of 20%, or strike the target for an additional 20% damage per stack instead of 15%.
For BM players, this makes completing the Season 2 4-set more valuable than it looked under the previous tuning.
Arcane Mage Tier Set Nerf – The Biggest Number Change?
Arcane Mage receives one of the most dramatic tier-set adjustments in the entire pass.
The Venomous Abyss 2-piece Arcane Missiles damage bonus is reduced from 20% to just 5%. The 4-piece Cumulative Power damage bonus is also reduced from 5% to 3% per stack.
Blizzard acknowledges that simply applying those tier nerfs would reduce Arcane's overall output more than intended, so all Arcane ability damage is increased by 3% at the same time.
The important distinction is that Arcane itself is not receiving a straightforward 15-point nerf to total damage. Blizzard is moving power away from an overtuned set bonus and into the base specialization, although the final result will depend on encounter type, gear level and how much of a player's damage profile previously came from the tier effects.
For players deciding what to craft or prioritize during the first Season 2 reset, updated simulations will be much more useful than any pre-August 18 tier list.
Arcane takeaway:
Do not read the 20% → 5% 2-set change as a 15% total DPS nerf. The percentage applies to the Arcane Missiles bonus, not the specialization's complete damage output.
Mistweaver Monk – 8% Healing Buff
Mistweaver is another clear PvE winner on paper.
All healing is increased by 8%, and the activation rate of the Venomous Abyss 4-piece bonus is increased by 33%.
Blizzard says the goal is to improve casted healing and preserve build diversity. An 8% aura-style healing increase is substantial enough that Mistweaver players should revisit early Season 2 healer comparisons after the tuning goes live.
Discipline Priest – 30% Damage Nerf, Atonement Compensation
Discipline Priest's headline change looks severe: all damage is being reduced by 30% in PvE.
However, Blizzard is attempting to keep overall healing stable by increasing Atonement's damage-to-healing conversion from 32% to 46%. Entropic Rift also gains 20% damage.
The developers specifically say Discipline's damage was overperforming compared with other healers. The Entropic Rift buff is intended to protect Voidweaver's dungeon viability and preserve high damage as one of that build's strengths.
For raid healing, the major question will be whether the increased Atonement conversion fully offsets the lower damage in real encounters. In Mythic+, Discipline will still deal damage as part of its normal gameplay, but its contribution to group DPS should be lower outside the compensated Voidweaver elements.
Holy Priest – Oracle Gets Major Buffs
Holy Priest's changes are focused heavily on making Oracle more competitive with Archon.
Enlightenment will regenerate mana 25% faster instead of 10%. Words of the Wise will increase Holy Word: Serenity and Holy Word: Sanctify healing by 40% instead of 10%. Prompt Prognosis healing increases by 55%, while Preventive Measures will boost Prayer of Mending healing by 40% instead of 15%.
These are targeted build and mana-economy buffs rather than a simple all-healing increase, which may make Oracle a much more realistic alternative in Season 2.
Rogue Changes – Assassination Buff, Subtlety Tier Nerf
Assassination Rogue receives a simple 4% increase to all damage.
Subtlety is more complicated. Its baseline damage increases by 6%, but the Venomous Abyss 4-piece effectiveness is reduced from 100% to 60%.
As with Arcane and Frost, Blizzard is trying to reduce the percentage of the spec's power locked behind the new set bonus.
Enhancement Shaman – 5% Damage Buff
Enhancement Shaman receives one of the cleanest changes in the tuning pass: all damage is increased by 5%. There is no accompanying Season 2 tier-set nerf listed in Blizzard's August 18 post.
Demonology Warlock – 2-Set Buffed
Demonology's Venomous Abyss 2-set was below Blizzard's target compared with other tier bonuses, so its Wild Imp Implosion effect is being strengthened.
Wild Imps will now Implode at 350% effectiveness against the main target instead of 250%, and 315% effectiveness against other targets instead of 225%.
This is a direct improvement to the value of Demonology's early Season 2 set bonus.
Fury Warrior – More Baseline Damage, Less 4-Set Power
Fury Warrior receives a 6% increase to all damage.
At the same time, the Venomous Abyss 4-set is being toned down. Bloodthirst still gains 10% damage, but during Recklessness it now increases Recklessness' critical-strike bonus by 3% per effect up to 6%, instead of 5% up to 10%.
Blizzard also notes that a recent bug caused Executioner to provide double value for Slayer. The hotfix brought Arms closer to the developers' intended range, while Fury's baseline buff is intended to compensate both for that correction and the set-bonus redistribution.
Midnight Season 2 PvP Tuning
The August 18 update also contains a substantial PvP tuning pass.
The broadest change is to the PvP trinket set bonus for damage dealers and tanks. It will now increase primary stat by 20% instead of 15%. Blizzard says PvP combat has been slower than intended and wants to increase outgoing damage.
Beyond that global adjustment, several specializations receive targeted PvP changes.
- Devourer DH — Direction: Nerf — PvP headline: Surrender to the Void Fury generation 100% → 60%
- Restoration Druid — Direction: Nerf — PvP headline: All healing -5% in PvP
- Fire Mage — Direction: Mixed — PvP headline: Pyroblast +10%; Meteor and Comet Storm -20%; 4-set usability changes
- Holy Paladin — Direction: Nerf / redistribution — PvP headline: Healing -5%, Judgment -30%, Avenging Crusader transfer increased
- Retribution Paladin — Direction: Buff / utility shift — PvP headline: Damage +8%, Final Verdict +15%, Hammer of Light +25%; utility cooldown reductions weakened
- Restoration Shaman — Direction: Mixed / buff — PvP headline: Healing +4%, Farseer buffs, Storm Conduit reduced
- Destruction Warlock — Direction: Nerf — PvP headline: Soul Fire -30% in PvP
Biggest Winners From the August 18 Tuning
It is too early to declare a final Season 2 meta before the tuning is live and real raid and Mythic+ data is available. On paper, however, several specs receive clearly positive changes:
- Mistweaver Monk – 8% healing plus a stronger 4-set activation rate.
- Restoration Druid – 4% healing and 20% damage in PvE.
- Assassination Rogue – straightforward 4% damage increase.
- Enhancement Shaman – straightforward 5% damage increase.
- Demonology Warlock – significantly stronger 2-set effect.
- Holy Priest Oracle – major targeted healing and mana-economy improvements.
- Beast Mastery Hunter – stronger Season 2 4-set.
Biggest Nerfs or Redistributions
Several specs lose large amounts of power from specific bonuses, although many receive baseline compensation:
- Arcane Mage – 2-set Arcane Missiles bonus 20% → 5%; 4-set also reduced.
- Devourer Demon Hunter – major 4-set Soul Fragment reduction and lower single-target damage on key abilities.
- San'layn Blood Death Knight – direct Visceral Strength and Transfusion nerfs.
- Discipline Priest – 30% lower PvE damage, with Atonement compensation aimed at healing.
- Subtlety Rogue – 4-set effectiveness 100% → 60%, offset by +6% damage.
- Frost Death Knight – tier 2-set values halved, offset by +9% baseline damage.
What Do the Tier Set Nerfs Mean for Season 2 Gearing?
The most important practical consequence is that pre-tuning gear rankings may already be outdated.
Players who planned to rush a particular Venomous Abyss tier bonus based on PTR simulations should wait for updated tools and class guides after the August 18 changes are implemented.
That does not mean tier sets are suddenly bad. In most cases, Blizzard is reducing extreme set-bonus value while buffing the base specialization. A tier bonus can remain mandatory for optimized play even after a large percentage reduction.
The key question is not whether a bonus went from 20% to 5% in isolation. The real question is how much total character throughput changes after the baseline compensation is included.
Should You Change Your Main Before Season 2?
Probably not based on this tuning pass alone.
Early-season balance is extremely volatile. Blizzard is reacting to projected performance before the raid and Mythic+ season has produced meaningful live data, and additional hotfixes are always possible.
A 4–9% aura buff can absolutely change rankings, but encounter design, damage profile, defensive utility, raid buffs, Mythic+ stops and player skill often matter more than a small simulation gap.
If your goal is Cutting Edge, Hall of Fame or very high Mythic+ keys, updated simulations and composition needs matter. For most players, continuing with a class you know well is usually more valuable than rerolling every time Blizzard posts a tuning pass.
What Should You Do Before the August 18 Reset?
- Read the full tuning block for your specialization, including tier-set changes.
- Do not rely on Season 2 tier lists published before the latest tuning.
- Wait for updated simulations before committing expensive crafted items around an outdated build.
- Recheck Hero Talents if your spec received targeted changes such as San'layn Blood DK or Holy Priest Oracle.
- PvP players should review the global trinket-set change as well as class-specific adjustments.
- Expect additional tuning once Blizzard has real Season 2 raid, Mythic+ and PvP data.

Yes. The PvP trinket set primary-stat bonus for damage dealers and tanks increases from 15% to 20%, and multiple specs receive targeted PvP buffs or nerfs.
Should I trust Season 2 tier lists published before August 18?
Use them cautiously. Any list based on older simulations may not include the latest baseline and Venomous Abyss tier-set changes.
Final Thoughts
The first Midnight Season 2 class-tuning pass is unusually focused on where character power comes from, not just the final DPS or HPS number.
Blizzard is actively reducing several overperforming Venomous Abyss set bonuses while compensating specs with stronger baseline abilities. That should make early Season 2 gearing less dependent on a few extreme tier effects, although the real balance picture will only become clear after raid and Mythic+ data arrives.
For players, the biggest immediate advice is simple: update your information before you craft, reroll or chase a tier list. Arcane Mage, Devourer Demon Hunter, Blood DK, Discipline Priest and several other specs will enter Season 2 in a different state than they appeared on PTR or in earlier simulations.
