WoW Forever Class Tier List - Best Classes and Specs Before Launch

WoW Forever Class Tier List - Best Classes and Specs Before Launch

Dariz · 10/19/2026

Picking a main in WoW Forever is already more complicated than picking the class with the biggest number on somebody else's spreadsheet.

Hunter is absurdly strong in the current Level 30 beta. Warrior is one of the slowest classes to level and still looks like it could become one of the strongest characters in the game at 60. Priest can feel painfully average while soloing and then become exactly the class a raid leader wants when twenty health bars start disappearing at the same time.

That is why this tier list does not mash leveling, dungeon DPS, raid projections and PvP into one fake mathematical score.

We rank the nine classes first as an overall main choice, then break out the areas where the actual evidence is much cleaner: current beta DPS, tanks and healers.

Quick answer:
Hunter and Warlock are our safest S-tier mains before launch. Hunter is the strongest all-round choice in the current beta, while Warlock combines excellent leveling, strong PvP and a very good Level 60 outlook. Shaman, Warrior, Paladin, Mage and Druid sit in A tier for different reasons. Rogue and Priest are B tier overall only because they are more specialized - both are excellent in the content they are built for.

WoW Forever Overall Class Tier List - October 19

  • S — Classes: Hunter, Warlock — WoWStats verdict: The safest mains right now. Strong early, strong utility, and at least one excellent projected endgame path.
  • A — Classes: Shaman, Warrior, Paladin, Mage, Druid — WoWStats verdict: Very strong mains with either role flexibility or excellent Level 60 upside, but one clear weakness in leveling, tuning or spec consistency.
  • B — Classes: Rogue, Priest — WoWStats verdict: Powerful specialists. Rogue is excellent when you want melee DPS/PvP; Priest is excellent when healing matters. Their overall class package is narrower.

S Tier - Hunter

If somebody forced me to recommend one class to a player who knows nothing about the Forever meta, I would say Hunter.

Mobalytics still has Hunter and Warlock alone in S tier for leveling, and its October 12 Level 30 dungeon list has Marksmanship at the top. LFCarry's post-October-15 list puts both Beast Mastery and Marksmanship in S tier and Survival in A.

The more interesting part is that Hunter does not disappear in Level 60 forecasts. ConquestCapped currently has Survival in S tier at 60 while Marksmanship and Beast Mastery remain useful thanks to Hunter utility and raid-wide Trueshot Aura after the October 15 build.

That spread is exactly what you want from a main: if Blizzard nerfs one Hunter tree, the class is not suddenly homeless.

We already broke down the pet scaling, in-combat traps, Lone Wolf and melee Survival redesign in our WoW Forever Hunter class deep dive.

S Tier - Warlock

Warlock is the least flashy S-tier pick and probably the one I trust the most.

It levels safely, has excellent sustain, brings Fear, summons, Healthstones and pets, and does not depend on one specific weapon dropping at the correct level. Mobalytics puts Warlock in S tier for leveling, while recent Level 60 forecasts place Demonology among the best caster builds.

The other reason is PvP. Soul Link-style Demonology remains miserable to kill, and that matters in a version of WoW where world PvP and battlegrounds are not isolated side activities.

If you want to test Demonology, Affliction or Destruction before launch, use our WoW Forever Warlock Talent Calculator.

A Tier - Shaman

Shaman has probably gained the most stock from the October 15 patch.

LFCarry moved Elemental up to A tier after Lava Burst became available earlier, Elemental Mastery returned as the capstone and Chain Lightning became cheaper. Enhancement is already S tier in its current Level 30 DPS table.

Then there is the reason raid leaders care even when meters do not: raid-wide totems. The latest build makes several important Shaman buffs raid-wide, which increases the value of bringing at least one Shaman dramatically.

Restoration also remains one of the strongest group healers thanks to Chain Heal, Riptide and Mana Tide.

The only reason I stop short of S tier is that the exact Level 60 DPS picture is still moving quickly, particularly for Elemental.

A Tier - Warrior

Warrior is why I refuse to publish one tier list and call it done.

As a leveling class? Rough. As a Level 30 character? Still missing major tools. As a Level 60 character with actual weapons, crit and full talent trees? Suddenly it is one of the scariest classes on the page.

ConquestCapped's current Level 60 forecast has Fury in S tier and Arms in A. Protection Warrior is either S or A depending on the source, but every serious tank ranking still treats it as one of the safest raid choices.

Warrior also benefits enormously from gear in a game Blizzard wants to keep horizontally relevant for a long time. That matters more here than it does in a seasonal game where today's sword becomes vendor trash next patch.

Our WoW Forever Warrior deep dive explains why the Rage redesign is a much bigger deal than it looks on paper.

A Tier - Paladin

Protection is the reason Paladin sits this high.

LFCarry currently has Protection Paladin as the top tank after the October 15 notes, while Mobalytics ranks it behind Warrior. ConquestCapped effectively treats both Warrior and Paladin as top-tier tanks in different situations: Warrior for hard boss hits, Paladin for packs and dungeon control.

That disagreement is actually good news. It means Prot Paladin is no longer the 'fun five-man tank that becomes awkward when the raid starts' that Classic players remember.

Holy remains useful, while Retribution dropped after the latest tuning and currently sits closer to the middle of the DPS pack. If you are choosing Paladin purely to top damage meters, I would wait. If you are choosing a class that can tank, heal and still quest comfortably, it is an easy A.

A Tier - Mage

Mage is one of the safest long-term DPS mains even though the current Level 30 ranking is not spectacular.

Why? Because the class is missing part of what makes it scale: later talents, more crit, more spell power and the gear that turns Arcane and Fire into real endgame builds.

Mobalytics still places Mage in A tier for leveling, while recent Level 60 forecasting rates Arcane and Fire much more highly than their current beta positions.

Frost remains the 'I would like to level without dying, thanks' option and still brings the control toolkit that has kept Mage relevant since 2004.

A Tier - Druid

Druid is the class I would recommend to somebody who changes their mind every forty minutes.

Restoration is rated anywhere from A to S depending on which current healer list you trust. Bear is a legitimate tank. Feral is playable DPS. Balance is the weak link right now and appears near the bottom of the fresh DPS lists.

But you do not main a Druid because every tree is rank one. You main a Druid because one character can solve almost any roster problem.

The class has also changed mechanically more than many returning players expect. See our WoW Forever Druid changes guide for weapon scaling, form changes and the Feral redesign.

B Tier - Rogue

Rogue is stronger than a B-tier label sounds.

Assassination and Combat are both A-tier DPS in the latest Level 30 list we checked, while Subtlety remains a strong PvP choice. Stealth, control and the ability to choose when a fight starts will never be bad in Classic-style WoW.

The reason Rogue lands in B overall is simple: every solution the class provides is still a DPS solution. If your guild already has enough melee, you cannot switch to healing or tanking without switching characters.

If your only question is 'which melee DPS should I play?', Rogue belongs much closer to A.

B Tier - Priest

Priest is the opposite problem.

If you want to heal, B tier is insulting. Holy, Discipline, Restoration Shaman and Restoration Druid are all fighting for the top healer spots in the current sources, and Priest is easily one of the classes I expect organized groups to recruit aggressively.

The overall class ranking drops only because leveling is slow and Shadow's current PvE damage remains behind the strongest DPS specs.

PvP is another story entirely: fresh Level 60 projections put Shadow among the strongest PvP specs because it combines pressure, control, shielding and self-healing.

Current Level 30 DPS Tier List After the October 15 Build

For current beta gameplay, the cleanest recent post-patch ranking comes from LFCarry's October 16 update. This is Level 30 dungeon/PvE performance, not a launch raid ranking.

  • S — Specs: Beast Mastery Hunter, Marksmanship Hunter, Enhancement Shaman
  • A — Specs: Survival Hunter, Assassination Rogue, Combat Rogue, Elemental Shaman, Demonology Warlock, Arms Warrior, Fury Warrior
  • B — Specs: Feral Druid, Arcane Mage, Fire Mage, Frost Mage, Retribution Paladin, Shadow Priest, Subtlety Rogue, Affliction Warlock, Destruction Warlock
  • C — Specs: Balance Druid

Mobalytics' October 12 dungeon list is even more aggressive about Marksmanship specifically and calls it the current Level 30 standout. The important shared conclusion is not which Hunter tree gets the crown - it is that Hunter is currently overrepresented near the top.

Why Level 30 DPS Is Not a Launch Raid Tier List

At level 30, pets and DoTs are unusually complete compared with classes waiting for capstones, later ranks, weapon scaling or crit-heavy gear.

That is why current beta rankings favor Hunter and some Shaman builds, while Level 60 forecasts suddenly push Fury Warrior, Demonology Warlock and Survival Hunter to the front.

If you are choosing a launch main, do not reroll because one Level 30 dungeon boss died three seconds faster.

Best Tanks in WoW Forever

The tank rankings are one of the clearest examples of why consensus matters more than copying a single list.

  • S — Tank: Protection Warrior — Why: Safest raid-boss profile, strong mitigation, improved Rage flow and reliable cooldowns.
  • S — Tank: Protection Paladin — Why: Best pack control/AoE threat, proper taunt, much stronger threat toolkit than Classic.
  • A — Tank: Feral Bear Druid — Why: Huge health/armor and better threat, but fewer cooldowns and weaker large-pack control.
  • B — Tank: Enhancement Shaman (dungeons) — Why: Can hold threat in small groups, but is not an officially supported raid tank tree.

Mobalytics puts Warrior first. LFCarry puts Paladin first. ConquestCapped says they are strongest in different jobs. For a pre-launch guide, that is enough evidence for me to call both S tier instead of pretending the disagreement does not exist.

Best Healers in WoW Forever

Healer rankings are less settled than tanks.

LFCarry has Discipline Priest and Restoration Druid in S tier after the October 15 notes. ConquestCapped puts Holy Priest and Restoration Shaman at the top because it weights raid-wide/group healing more heavily.

That tells us something useful: the top four are all strong, but they solve different problems.

  • Top tier — Healers: Holy Priest, Discipline Priest, Restoration Shaman, Restoration Druid — Best at: Different mixes of group healing, mitigation, efficiency and utility.
  • High tier — Healers: Holy Paladin — Best at: Excellent tank/single-target healing and powerful utility, but less universal group healing.

What About MythicSim?

MythicSim is one of the more interesting tools because it attempts fixed Level 60 simulations instead of ranking vibes.

However, its October 19 tier-list page is currently recalculating the latest engine build and explicitly says the current board is still work in progress. The methodology uses a fixed level 60 reference character, a roughly two-minute single-target boss and 10,000 iterations.

That is useful context, not a reason to publish a fake 'sim says X is #1' headline while the current board is pending. We will use it much more heavily once the post-October-15 sweeps are complete.

Which Class Should You Main?

  • Safest first main — Best picks: Hunter, Warlock
  • Tank main — Best picks: Warrior, Paladin
  • Healer main — Best picks: Priest, Shaman, Druid
  • Flexible hybrid — Best picks: Shaman, Paladin, Druid
  • Melee DPS endgame upside — Best picks: Warrior, Rogue, Survival Hunter
  • Ranged DPS — Best picks: Hunter, Warlock, Mage
  • PvP focus — Best picks: Hunter, Warlock, Priest, Rogue
  • Least gear-dependent leveling — Best picks: Hunter, Warlock

If race restrictions matter to your choice, our WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide lists every confirmed combination.

And before you commit to a class because somebody put it in S tier, actually build the character in our WoW Forever Talent Calculator. A fun A-tier class is a much better main than an S-tier class you hate playing.

WoW Forever Class Tier List FAQ

What is the best class in WoW Forever right now?

Hunter is the safest overall pick in the current Level 30 beta because it combines top damage, excellent leveling, strong PvP and three viable DPS directions. Warlock is the other class we consider S tier overall.

What is the best DPS class in WoW Forever Beta?

After the October 15 build, Beast Mastery Hunter, Marksmanship Hunter and Enhancement Shaman occupy the S tier in the freshest Level 30 ranking we used.

What is the best tank in WoW Forever?

Protection Warrior and Protection Paladin both belong in the top tier. Warrior looks safer on hard raid bosses; Paladin has exceptional AoE threat and dungeon control.

What is the best healer in WoW Forever?

There is no clean consensus yet. Holy Priest, Discipline Priest, Restoration Shaman and Restoration Druid all appear at or near the top of fresh October rankings depending on whether the list emphasizes raids, dungeons, group healing or efficiency.

Why is Warrior not S tier overall?

Warrior has enormous Level 60 upside, but its leveling experience and current low-level toolkit are weaker than Hunter or Warlock. For endgame-only ranking, Warrior moves much higher.

Will this tier list change before launch?

Almost certainly. Blizzard made a broad class tuning pass on October 15 and Forever is still in beta. We will update the guide whenever a meaningful tuning build changes the current placements.

Final Thoughts

The most dangerous thing about a pre-launch tier list is pretending it knows more than it does.

We know Hunter is excellent at 30. We know Protection Warrior and Paladin look like real tanks. We know the healer roster is much healthier than Classic. We know Warrior gets dramatically more interesting as gear and full talents enter the picture.

What we do not have is a month of live level 60 raid logs.

So use this list the way a WoW player should use any tier list before launch: narrow the choices, understand the strengths, then pick the class whose bad days you are willing to tolerate.

You spend far more time playing your main than looking at the letter next to its icon.
