WoW Forever Beta: New Elemental Set, Iconic Weapons Stay Strong and Blizzard Talks Future Zones

11 min read

World of Warcraft: Forever keeps producing beta discoveries that look small on their own and much more interesting when you put them next to each other.

This week, players found a new five-piece caster set that can literally summon an Arcane Elemental. At the same time, Blizzard had to step in and calm down rumors that two of Classic's most recognizable leveling swords had been nerfed. And during PAX Australia, the developers were asked the question that is going to follow Forever for years: if this version of Azeroth keeps growing, do we eventually go to Northrend or Pandaria?

Those are three very different topics, but they all point toward the same design philosophy.

Forever does not look interested in turning old Azeroth into a perfectly normalized theme park. Blizzard seems much more comfortable letting gear be strange, letting old rewards stay famous, and letting the world expand slowly enough that players still have things to discover.

Quick answer:
WoW Forever's current beta includes the new Violet Sorcerer's Vestments caster set, whose five-piece bonus can summon an Arcane Elemental. Blizzard also confirmed that Outlaw Sabre and Thrash Blade are not being nerfed. Northrend and Pandaria are not confirmed for Forever: Holly Longdale says nothing is off the table, but the team's current focus is continuing to evolve Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.

WoW Forever Beta - What Changed This Week?

  • Violet Sorcerer's Vestments — Confirmed information: A five-piece cloth set tied to City of Dalaran can summon an Arcane Elemental. — Why it matters: Forever is leaning into unusual, build-flavored gear instead of only stat upgrades.
  • Outlaw Sabre — Confirmed information: Aidan 'Zirene' Moon says the weapon is not being nerfed and will remain Blue. — Why it matters: One of the best-known leveling quest rewards keeps its identity.
  • Thrash Blade — Confirmed information: Blizzard says screenshots showing a downgraded version were fake/jokes. — Why it matters: The famous extra-attack sword remains intact in the current beta direction.
  • Northrend / Pandaria — Confirmed information: Nothing is off the table, but no trip to either continent is confirmed. — Why it matters: Blizzard currently wants Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor to keep evolving.
  • Collections — Confirmed information: Undiscovered collectibles are intentionally hidden from the Forever UI. — Why it matters: Community discovery is meant to remain part of the game.

Violet Sorcerer's Vestments Can Summon an Arcane Elemental

The flashiest new discovery comes from the City of Dalaran, one of Forever's new dungeons in the Alterac Mountains.

The dungeon is aimed roughly at levels 28 to 34, and players are now finding pieces connected to a new five-piece cloth set called Violet Sorcerer's Vestments. The name screams Mage, but the bonuses are not class-locked. Any cloth caster capable of using the stats can potentially get value from it.

What makes the set interesting is that it does not stop at Intellect and spell damage. The deeper bonuses start behaving more like miniature build mechanics.

Violet Sorcerer's Vestments Set Bonuses

  • 2 pieces — Set bonus: +5 Arcane Resistance.
  • 3 pieces — Set bonus: +10 Spirit.
  • 4 pieces — Set bonus: Damaging spells can allow 15% of Mana regeneration to continue while casting for 15 seconds. The Mana regeneration amount is doubled in Strongholds and Cities.
  • 5 pieces — Set bonus: Damaging spells can summon an Arcane Elemental to aid you in combat.

The five-piece effect is the obvious headline. Beta players report that the summoned Arcane Elemental fights beside you for roughly 20 seconds, although that duration is not stated in the current tooltip and should still be treated as beta behavior rather than a locked launch value.

The four-piece bonus is almost as interesting. Mana regeneration while casting is already useful for leveling casters, but doubling the effect specifically inside Strongholds and Cities is exactly the kind of oddly contextual bonus that makes old-school gear memorable.

It is not a generic '+2% damage everywhere' line. It asks where you are fighting.

This Is the Kind of Gear Forever Needs

A five-piece level-30-ish cloth set that occasionally gives your caster a temporary Arcane buddy is not clean, perfectly balanced itemization. That is why I like it.

Classic WoW gear is memorable because items are allowed to be strange. Some weapons are valuable for ten levels longer than their item level suggests. Some trinkets become part of an entire build. Some resistance pieces look useless until one encounter suddenly makes them perfect.

Forever has a real opportunity to keep that feeling while adding completely new loot. Violet Sorcerer's Vestments is a good example because you can understand the fantasy immediately without needing a simulator: collect the set, cast spells, occasionally get an Elemental.

If you are already planning a caster for launch, the WoW Forever Mage Talent Calculator and Priest Talent Calculator let you test the current beta talent trees before deciding how that sort of gear could fit your build.

Mage Set in Name, Useful to More Than Mages

Icy Veins notes that the set is themed around Mages but can be useful to other casters as well. That distinction matters in a Classic-style loot system, where an item does not necessarily arrive with a giant label telling you which specialization is allowed to want it.

A Shadow Priest cares about Intellect, spell damage and Mana. Warlocks can care about several of the same stats. A Mage obviously fits the fantasy best, but the interesting part is that the itemization leaves room for players to argue about who should actually wear it.

For Priest players specifically, we already broke down the new Discipline, Holy and Shadow design in our WoW Forever Priest class deep dive.

Blizzard Says More Build-Defining Items Are Still Hidden

The Arcane Elemental set also fits something Clay Stone discussed during the PAX Australia interview covered by Icy Veins.

Stone referenced the strange 'Battle Mage sword' players had already discovered during beta testing and said there are other build-defining items in Forever that players have not found yet.

That is probably the more important story than one specific set bonus.

If Blizzard is deliberately placing items around the world that can change how a character is built or played, gear hunting becomes part of character discovery instead of only a race toward a predetermined best-in-slot list.

Of course, the internet will eventually solve everything. It always does. The question is whether Forever can give us a few weeks where the answer is not already sitting in a complete spreadsheet before the first player even enters the dungeon.

Forever Is Deliberately Hiding Undiscovered Items

Blizzard is trying to protect some of that discovery at the UI level as well.

In the same PAX interview, Clay Stone explained that Forever's Collections interface does not work exactly like Retail. Modern WoW can show you collectibles you do not own. Forever is designed to reveal information only for things you have actually discovered.

The goal is pretty obvious: Blizzard wants players talking to each other again.

Where did that pet come from? Which boss dropped that sword? Why does the Mage in Ironforge have an Elemental following him?

That also means community databases will naturally be incomplete when new content opens. If an item has not been discovered, the game is intentionally giving data sites less to work with.

That is worth remembering if you use loot addons. Our Best WoW Forever Addons guide explains why tools such as AtlasLoot can only become complete after the community actually finds the new drops.

Outlaw Sabre Is Not Being Nerfed

The other big item story this week came from a rumor that immediately made Classic players nervous.

Screenshots began circulating that appeared to show Outlaw Sabre downgraded in the latest beta build. That would have been a meaningful change: Outlaw Sabre is one of those quest rewards people route around because a strong weapon upgrade at the right level can transform the next several hours of leveling.

Senior Game Designer Aidan 'Zirene' Moon shut that rumor down.

According to his clarification, Outlaw Sabre is not being nerfed and will remain a Blue-quality reward.

The current Forever database also continues to list the sword as the familiar rare quest weapon with +16 Attack Power.

Thrash Blade Is Safe Too

Then the joke spread to Thrash Blade.

A fake or edited image showed a version of the weapon with the exact opposite of the effect players actually care about. Thrash Blade is famous because its proc grants an extra attack on your next swing. The meme version effectively turned that into an extra miss.

Apparently enough people saw the screenshot without reading the punchline that Zirene had to clarify this one too.

Blizzard's message is simple: if you saw a non-Blue version of Thrash Blade, you were being trolled. The famous sword is not being deliberately gutted as part of the current beta item pass.

That may sound like a tiny piece of news, but for Forever it matters.

Why Keeping Famous Leveling Weapons Matters

One of the easiest ways to make Classic-style leveling feel flat is to smooth every reward into the same statistical curve.

Outlaw Sabre and Thrash Blade are memorable because players know when they are coming and feel the upgrade the moment they equip them. The same is true of Whirlwind Axe, Ravager, Verigan's Fist and a dozen other items people can name years after they last leveled through old Azeroth.

Forever absolutely should rebalance obviously broken content when it needs to. But there is a difference between fixing a problem and erasing the spikes that make leveling routes interesting.

The reassuring part of the latest clarification is not simply that two swords kept their color. It is that Blizzard appears aware those weapons have cultural weight inside Classic.

That fits the broader philosophy Blizzard recently described for Forever. In our WoW Forever development direction analysis, we covered the team's goal of expanding horizontally while keeping older rewards and content relevant for longer.

Will WoW Forever Eventually Go to Northrend or Pandaria?

This is probably the biggest long-term question in the entire article, and the answer is deliberately noncommittal.

At PAX Australia, Holly Longdale and Clay Stone were asked whether Forever might eventually move beyond Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor into other Azeroth continents such as Northrend or Pandaria.

Longdale's answer was effectively: nothing is off the table, but that is not the current priority.

The team expects Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor to continue evolving over time and believes those two continents alone can support a very long runway of new content. Blizzard is more interested in following the best narrative than in adding a new continent simply because players expect the next map.

Important:
Northrend and Pandaria are not confirmed WoW Forever destinations. Blizzard has left the possibility open, but current development is centered on continuing to evolve Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.

That Is Probably the Right Answer for Forever

If Forever launches in November and immediately starts counting down toward Outland, Northrend and Pandaria, it becomes another progression server with extra steps.

The interesting promise of Forever is the opposite: what if Westfall, the Barrens, Alterac, Lordaeron and the rest of original Azeroth are allowed to keep changing instead of being abandoned every time Blizzard needs a new continent?

The City of Dalaran dungeon is a perfect example. Forever can take a place Classic players already know, ask what happened next, and turn it into something playable without jumping the entire timeline forward to Wrath of the Lich King.

Eventually going to Northrend could be fantastic. So could Pandaria. But neither location needs to be used as a checklist item just because those continents exist.

If you are still deciding what kind of character you want to take through this expanding version of Azeroth, our WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide lists every currently confirmed launch combination and role.

What About Shaman Tanking?

The same PAX interview also touched on another question beta players keep asking: are the defensive talents in Enhancement pointing toward a real Shaman tank role?

For launch, the answer is no.

Clay Stone said Shaman tanking is a popular topic inside the Forever team and the developers are interested in seeing how players use each class, but Blizzard is not officially pursuing an endgame Shaman tank role for launch.

That leaves the door open for experimentation without promising support that does not exist yet, which is probably the healthiest way to handle it during beta.

What These Three Stories Tell Us About WoW Forever

The new caster set, the weapon rumors and the Northrend question look unrelated until you ask what Blizzard is trying to protect.

  • Gear should be memorable enough that players talk about specific items, not only item level.
  • Old leveling rewards can stay powerful when their identity is part of the fun.
  • New content does not need to invalidate the world that already exists.
  • Some information is intentionally hidden so discovery can happen in-game first.
  • Forever can borrow modern technology without adopting Retail's expectation that everything is visible, standardized and immediately documented.

That is a difficult balance to maintain once thousands of players, databases, addons and guide sites start pulling the game apart.

But this week's beta stories are at least pointing in the right direction.

Give me strange dungeon sets. Let me remember where my weapon came from. And please do not send us to Northrend just because a roadmap spreadsheet says it is time for Northrend.

WoW Forever Beta FAQ

What is Violet Sorcerer's Vestments in WoW Forever?

Violet Sorcerer's Vestments is a five-piece cloth caster set being discovered through the City of Dalaran content. Its bonuses include Arcane Resistance, Spirit, Mana regeneration while casting and a five-piece proc that can summon an Arcane Elemental.

How do you summon the Arcane Elemental in WoW Forever?

The current five-piece Violet Sorcerer's Vestments bonus gives damaging spells a chance to summon an Arcane Elemental. Beta players report that it fights temporarily, but the tooltip does not specify a duration.

Is Violet Sorcerer's Vestments only for Mages?

No. The set is strongly Mage-themed, but it is not presented as a Mage-only class set. Other cloth casters can potentially benefit from its stats and bonuses.

Was Outlaw Sabre nerfed in WoW Forever?

No. Senior Game Designer Aidan 'Zirene' Moon said Outlaw Sabre is not being nerfed and will remain Blue-quality.

Was Thrash Blade nerfed in WoW Forever?

No. Blizzard clarified that screenshots showing a downgraded Thrash Blade were misleading or jokes. The weapon's famous extra-attack identity remains intact in the current beta direction.

Will WoW Forever go to Northrend?

It is possible, but not confirmed. Holly Longdale said nothing is off the table while emphasizing that Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor are expected to keep evolving for a long time.

Will WoW Forever go to Pandaria?

Pandaria is also not confirmed. Blizzard is currently prioritizing the best story and continued development of the original two continents rather than promising future expansion locations.

Can Enhancement Shaman tank in WoW Forever?

Blizzard is not officially supporting Enhancement Shaman as an endgame tank role at launch. The team is aware of player interest and has discussed the idea internally.

Are these WoW Forever item values final?

No. WoW Forever is still in beta, so item stats, set bonuses, drop locations and tuning can change before launch.

Final Thoughts

The closer Forever gets to launch, the more important these small discoveries become.

A new dungeon set tells us how Blizzard wants loot to feel. A panicked rumor about two old swords tells us which parts of Classic players are terrified of losing. And one answer about Northrend tells us whether Forever is trying to repeat World of Warcraft's old expansion path or build something genuinely different.

Right now, I would rather Blizzard stay in Azeroth and fill it with items worth remembering than rush toward another continent.

Violet Sorcerer's Vestments is not going to define the entire game. Outlaw Sabre is not going to decide whether Forever succeeds. But this is the texture that will.

If I can finish a dungeon, equip a weird five-piece set, summon an Elemental and then argue with my group about where somebody found their sword, Forever is doing something Classic has always done extremely well.
