WoW Mythic+ Nerfs Hit Altar of Fangs, Ruby Life Pools and More in Patch 12.1.5

11 min read

Patch 12.1.5 is not just adding more power to Midnight Season 2. Blizzard is also making the road to 3600 rating noticeably less painful.

The October 13 tuning pass hits six Mythic+ dungeons, with Altar of Fangs receiving by far the largest list. Ruby Life Pools gets another round of damage and health reductions, Murder Row loses a chunk of Fire Bomb damage, Blinding Vale gets broad trash and boss relief, Temple of Sethraliss has Spark Step cut by 25%, and Voidscar Arena gets several timing and damage changes.

If you copied your route notes before reset and assumed the dungeon pool would feel identical, this is a good week to read them again.

Quick answer:
Altar of Fangs is the biggest winner: multiple trash mobs lose health or damage, Living Venom loses 25% health and 50% Venom Burst damage, and Piercing Hiss is both weaker and less frequent. Ruby Life Pools, Murder Row, Blinding Vale, Temple of Sethraliss and Voidscar Arena are also nerfed.

October 13 Mythic+ Tuning - Quick Summary

  • Altar of Fangs — Direction: Large nerf — Biggest practical change: Multiple trash health/damage reductions; Living Venom and Piercing Hiss significantly safer.
  • Murder Row — Direction: Targeted nerf — Biggest practical change: Zaen Bladesorrow Fire Bomb damage reduced by 33%.
  • Ruby Life Pools — Direction: Broad nerf — Biggest practical change: Several trash mechanics and Kokia Blazehoof become less punishing.
  • Temple of Sethraliss — Direction: Targeted nerf — Biggest practical change: Static Anomaly Spark Step damage reduced by 25%.
  • The Blinding Vale — Direction: Broad nerf — Biggest practical change: Belcher, Spellsower, Ruia and Ziekket damage/health reduced.
  • Voidscar Arena — Direction: Broad nerf — Biggest practical change: Leap cooldown, aura duration and several periodic-damage sources eased.

Altar of Fangs Gets the Biggest Nerf Package

Altar of Fangs has enough changes here to feel like Blizzard went through the dungeon with a highlighter and circled every trash pack healers hate.

  • Primal Serpent: Piercing Hiss damage -25%; cooldown +10%.
  • Ravenous Descendant: health -9%.
  • Twinfang Harrower: health -6%; Paralyzing Shot periodic damage -20%; duration 20 -> 14 sec.
  • Ritual Chieftain: Blood Sacrifice healing absorb -12%.
  • Rattling Writhe: health -6%; Rattle periodic damage -25%.
  • Bloodletter: health -5%.
  • Ascendant Serpent: health -21%.
  • Living Venom: health -25%; Venom Burst damage -50%.
  • Rav'i: Carrion Burst periodic damage -10%.
  • Zul'jan: Axegrinder periodic damage -15%.

The Living Venom change is the one that jumps off the page. Cutting both health and Venom Burst means the add dies faster and is dramatically less punishing if the group is slow.

Piercing Hiss is another big quality-of-life win. Lower damage plus a longer cooldown reduces both immediate danger and frequency, which is exactly what you want from a mechanic that can dominate healer attention in high keys.

Why Altar of Fangs Routes May Feel Different

These changes do not directly change enemy forces, so your MDT route does not suddenly become invalid.

They can still change how aggressively you pull.

When several mobs in the same section lose health, periodic damage or healing absorbs at once, packs that previously demanded a one-by-one approach can become realistic candidates for larger pulls - especially once groups also start benefiting from the mid-season power progression.

I would not blindly double your first pull on patch day. But I would absolutely revisit the packs your group marked as 'never combine' earlier in the season.

Murder Row Fire Bomb Damage Drops by 33%

Murder Row gets one very specific change: Zaen Bladesorrow's Fire Bomb damage is reduced by 33%.

This is not the route-changing adjustment we saw earlier in Season 2 when required enemy forces were lowered and a trash pack was removed. It is a survivability change.

If you want the full context on the earlier Murder Row, Sethraliss and Ruby Life Pools reworks, our Season 2 Mythic+ dungeon tuning article covers that first major pass.

Ruby Life Pools Gets Another Round of Nerfs

Ruby Life Pools is once again on Blizzard's tuning list, and I am starting to think the dungeon has its own reserved seat in the hotfix notes.

  • Earthbound Guardian: Earthbound's Imprint impact damage -21%; periodic damage -13%.
  • Defier Draghar: health -27%.
  • Primalist Cinderweaver: Living Bomb can now be dispelled without triggering explosion damage.
  • Storm Warrior: Thunderous Stomp damage -18%.
  • High Channeler Ryvati: Tempest Stormshield absorb reduced from 20% to 15% of maximum health.
  • Melidrussa Chillworn: Infused Whelp Cold Claws cooldown increased.
  • Kokia Blazehoof: Blazebound Firestorm health -12.5%; Inferno impact damage -18%; periodic damage -14%.

The Living Bomb dispel change is probably the best mechanical adjustment in the entire dungeon list. If a healer can remove the debuff without immediately detonating the target, dispel timing becomes a real answer instead of another way to kill somebody.

Kokia's section also gets meaningfully safer because Blizzard is reducing both the add's durability and the damage attached to its core pressure.

Temple of Sethraliss Gets a 25% Spark Step Nerf

Temple of Sethraliss receives a single targeted adjustment: Static Anomaly's Spark Step damage is reduced by 25%.

This is the kind of tuning I prefer when the dungeon is mostly fine but one trash ability is overperforming. You keep the encounter structure and simply stop one spell from deciding the entire pull.

Blinding Vale Gets Broad Damage Relief

The Blinding Vale gets a much wider pass.

  • Sporeblight Belcher: health -11%; Spouting Floret and Belch Sore damage -16%; projectiles per Belch Sore tick 5 -> 3.
  • Radiant Spellsower: Light Bolt Volley damage -16%.
  • Lightwarden Ruia: Lightfire periodic damage -15%; Pulverizing Strikes -12%.
  • Ziekket: Lightspawn Lasher health -10%; Lightspore Shot and Oozing Xylem damage -16%; Vicious Regrowth buff 30% -> 20%.

The Belch Sore projectile reduction is particularly important because it changes the mechanic's density, not just its coefficient. Three projectiles instead of five gives the group more room to react and reduces the chance of overlapping unavoidable-looking damage.

Voidscar Arena Also Gets Multiple Nerfs

  • Feral Saberon: Savage Leap cooldown increased by 25%.
  • Chitigoth: Insidious Aura channel reduced from 10 seconds to 8.
  • Brutal Overseer: Brutal Slams damage increase per slam reduced from 10% to 8%.
  • Atroxus: Poison Splash periodic damage -11%; Toxic Aura periodic damage -20%.
  • Charonus: Condensed Mass periodic damage -20%.

Most of these are healer-pressure changes. Shorter dangerous channels and weaker periodic damage smooth the damage profile instead of changing how the dungeon is routed.

Why Blizzard Is Nerfing Dungeons as Keystone Myth Arrives

Patch 12.1.5 also brings back Keystone Myth, with the Season 2 achievement requiring 3600 Mythic+ rating.

Blizzard explicitly said it would make targeted dungeon adjustments to address difficulty outliers when the mid-season challenge arrived.

That is why these nerfs should not be viewed as random mercy. The rating target is going up, the character power ceiling is also going up, and Blizzard is trying to make sure a few specific dungeon mechanics do not distort the entire push season.

Whether the net result is too easy is a fair debate. Players in the official tuning thread are already split between 'thank you, these pain points were awful' and 'stop nerfing the game.'

As usual, the real answer will be visible in key completion data over the next couple of resets.

How This Interacts With Class Tuning

The dungeon changes land immediately after a class pass that nerfed Unholy Death Knight's Blightfall and buffed Devourer Demon Hunter, Brewmaster, Mistweaver, Subtlety Trickster and Enhancement Shaman. See the full breakdown in our October 6 class tuning article.

That means your group is not only entering easier dungeon mechanics. Some specs are also entering the reset with a different damage or survival profile.

If your main received changes, check the current WoWStats PvE talent pages once enough post-patch keys have been logged.

What Should You Change Before Your Next Key?

  • Do not automatically replace routes; most changes are difficulty tuning rather than enemy-count tuning.
  • Revisit Altar of Fangs pull sizes, especially around Living Venom and Harrower packs.
  • In Ruby Life Pools, update healer notes: Living Bomb can now be dispelled without the explosion.
  • Re-evaluate defensive cooldowns for Kokia Blazehoof and several Blinding Vale packs because the damage profile is lower.
  • If you push for Keystone Myth, treat the first week as new data rather than assuming pre-patch dungeon rankings remain accurate.

WoW Mythic+ October 13 Tuning FAQ

Was Altar of Fangs nerfed in Patch 12.1.5?

Yes. It received the largest dungeon tuning pass, with health and damage reductions across Primal Serpent, Harrowers, Living Venom, Ascendant Serpent, Zul'jan and several other enemies.

How much was Living Venom nerfed?

Living Venom has 25% less health and Venom Burst deals 50% less damage.

Was Ruby Life Pools nerfed again?

Yes. Multiple trash enemies and Kokia Blazehoof were nerfed, and Living Bomb can now be dispelled without causing its explosion damage.

Did Murder Row get nerfed?

Yes. Zaen Bladesorrow's Fire Bomb damage is reduced by 33%.

Did Temple of Sethraliss get nerfed?

Yes. Static Anomaly's Spark Step damage is reduced by 25%.

Did Blinding Vale get nerfed?

Yes. Several trash abilities and Ziekket-related mechanics have lower damage, health or effect density.

Why are these nerfs happening now?

Patch 12.1.5 introduces the Season 2 Keystone Myth push to 3600 rating and Blizzard said it would target difficulty outliers as the mid-season power refresh arrived.

Final Thoughts

This is a very player-friendly tuning pass because Blizzard mostly attacked mechanics that create disproportionate danger rather than simply flattening every dungeon by ten percent.

Altar of Fangs should be noticeably less exhausting. Ruby Life Pools gets a genuinely better dispel interaction. Blinding Vale loses some of its ugliest damage stacking. And smaller targeted changes hit Murder Row, Sethraliss and Voidscar without rewriting those dungeons.

The real question is what happens once mid-season power and these nerfs stack together. A +12 that felt brutal last week may feel dramatically different in two resets.

If you are pushing 3600 for Keystone Myth, do not wait for somebody else's tier list to tell you what changed. Run the dungeons, update your route notes and pay attention to which pulls suddenly become realistic.
