WoW Forever Racials Changed Again Before Launch - Human Nerfed, Tauren Hits 60% Speed

11 min read

If you spent the weekend deciding your WoW Forever race based on a racial tier list, I have unfortunate news: Blizzard has changed the homework again.

With launch only days away, the developers have made what they describe as a final pre-launch pass on racial abilities. Humans lose half of Ruthless's crit bonus but gain more Spirit. Dwarves trade critical damage for 1% hit. Tauren can build up to 60% movement speed through Plainsrunning. Orcs lose generic crit but get Command back. Skyborne lose some passive Haste and have their strongest Leyline and Skysight bonuses kept out of raids.

Then, less than a day later, Blizzard added more changes.

Blood Fury is back to a two-minute cooldown. Troll Berserking now lasts 15 seconds. Undead Touch of the Grave can proc much more often.

So yes: if you are reserving your characters today, the racial spreadsheet you looked at yesterday may already be wrong.

Quick answer:
Blizzard's latest WoW Forever racial tuning nerfs Human Ruthless from 2% to 1% crit, gives Dwarves 1% hit, doubles Tauren Plainsrunning to a 60% maximum, restores Orc Command for Hunter and Warlock pets, extends Troll Berserking to 15 seconds, reduces Undead Touch of the Grave's internal cooldown to 15 seconds and lowers Skyborne passive Haste to 2%. Blood Fury has also been restored to a 2-minute cooldown.

Why Blizzard Is Changing Racials Again

The developer explanation is more interesting than the individual numbers.

Blizzard says feedback during beta pulled in two directions. Some players thought newer racial traits had become too generic. Others were worried that certain racials were clearly stronger than the alternatives and could make race choice feel mandatory.

The team's answer is not to make every race mathematically identical.

Blizzard says racial identity comes first and accepts that some races will naturally be slightly better at particular combat roles.

There is one major exception: weapon specializations.

Human Sword Specialization and Orc Axe Specialization are not coming back. Blizzard argues that forcing future dungeon and raid loot to be evaluated around a race-specific weapon type is unhealthy for the game.

That philosophy makes sense to me. A Dwarf being better at hitting things or a Tauren moving differently is flavor. A Human Warrior refusing a fantastic axe because their racial says swords are mandatory is mostly an itemization problem pretending to be flavor.

Every New WoW Forever Racial Change

  • Human — Latest change: Ruthless 2% -> 1% crit; Human Spirit 5% -> 10% Spirit — What it means: Less universal throughput, stronger Spirit identity for healers and mana users.
  • Dwarf — Latest change: Earth Fury removed; Artisan's Precision adds 1% hit with spells and attacks — What it means: A much cleaner PvE throughput racial, especially before hit caps are solved through gear.
  • Tauren — Latest change: Plainsrunning 2% per stack, max 60%; no mounted benefit; Endurance only +5% Health — What it means: Huge open-world mobility, but less direct raid throughput.
  • Orc — Latest change: Savage 1% crit removed; Command returns at +5% Hunter/Warlock pet damage; Blood Fury back to 2 min — What it means: More class-specific identity; very attractive for pet classes.
  • Troll — Latest change: Berserking duration 10 -> 15 sec — What it means: A 50% longer offensive haste window.
  • Undead — Latest change: Touch of the Grave internal cooldown 25 -> 15 sec — What it means: More frequent passive damage and self-healing procs.
  • Skyborne — Latest change: Wind-Blessed 3% -> 2% Haste; Leyline/Skysight retuned; Attuned/Charged removed in raids — What it means: Still strong mobility/open-world utility, but less potential to bring pre-buffed racial advantages into raids.

Human: Less Crit, Twice the Spirit

Human is the clearest example of Blizzard trying to remove a universal best-in-slot racial without deleting the race's identity.

Ruthless drops from 2% critical strike chance to 1%. That is a straightforward nerf for basically every damage dealer and healer that valued crit.

At the same time, Human Spirit doubles from 5% to 10% Spirit.

That is not an equal trade for every class. A Rogue does not suddenly celebrate a giant Spirit passive. A healer or mana-dependent caster has a much better reason to care, especially in Forever where several abilities and recovery mechanics explicitly interact with Spirit.

This is exactly the sort of specialization Blizzard says it is willing to keep: Human may be better for certain roles instead of being generically better at everything.

If you are still choosing between Human and another race for a specific class, our WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide shows every legal combination before you lock in a character.

Dwarf: 1% Hit Replaces Earth Fury

Dwarf probably received the cleanest PvE change in the entire pass.

Earth Fury - the 2% critical damage and healing passive - is gone.

In its place, Artisan's Precision increases hit chance with spells and attacks by 1%.

At level 60, hit is the sort of stat players immediately start doing spreadsheets about because missing an important attack or spell is not only a damage loss; it can break rotations, threat plans and encounter timing.

We do not have live level-60 raid data yet, so I would not translate 1% hit into a fake exact DPS number.

But mechanically, this is much easier to value than 2% increased critical damage. For physical and spell DPS that still need hit from gear, Artisan's Precision should be immediately relevant.

Healers obviously get much less from it, which again reinforces Blizzard's 'some races are better at some jobs' philosophy.

Tauren: Plainsrunning Can Reach 60% Movement Speed

Tauren got the change everybody is going to notice in town.

Plainsrunning now grants 2% movement speed per stack instead of 1%, doubling its maximum from 30% to 60%.

There is a catch: Plainsrunning no longer increases mounted movement speed.

That means it is incredibly noticeable while running around the open world before or between mounts, but it is not a secret permanent mount-speed racial.

Endurance also becomes simpler. It now only grants 5% increased Health; the additional hit and critical-damage style modifiers are gone.

This leaves Tauren in a funny place. For leveling and world content, 60% built-up movement speed is fantastic. For a player choosing race exclusively around raid DPS, the package is far less obvious.

And honestly, I am okay with that. A racial that makes your Tauren feel like a Tauren is more interesting than another invisible 1% damage line.

Orc: Generic Crit Is Gone, Command Is Back

Orc is where Blizzard's philosophy becomes more controversial.

Savage, the generic 1% critical strike chance passive, has been removed.

Command returns instead, increasing Hunter and Warlock pet damage by 5%.

That is fantastic racial identity if you are a Beast Mastery Hunter or pet-focused Warlock.

It is also completely irrelevant if you are an Orc Warrior or Mage.

There is a reasonable argument that this creates the same kind of class lock-in Blizzard is trying to avoid with weapon specializations. The difference is that Command does not tell the loot team what weapon has to drop; it tells players that Orc has a particular relationship with pets.

Whether that distinction feels good in practice is something level-60 raid data will answer better than theorycrafting can.

Blood Fury Is Back to a 2-Minute Cooldown

The first version of the tuning notes left Blood Fury at a three-minute cooldown.

Blizzard then updated the notes on October 27 and reduced it back to two minutes.

That makes the active racial much easier to line up with class cooldowns and boss burn windows.

It also softens the loss of Savage for Orc classes that do not benefit from Command.

For Hunter players specifically, this makes race choice more interesting because the class itself is already one of the strongest pre-launch options. See our WoW Forever Hunter deep dive for the pet scaling and Beast Mastery changes behind that synergy.

Troll: Berserking Now Lasts 15 Seconds

Troll did not appear in the first published list, but Blizzard added a significant change on October 27.

Berserking now lasts 15 seconds instead of 10.

That is a 50% longer window for the racial's attack and casting speed increase.

The exact value depends heavily on your class, cooldown alignment and how much of the 15-second window you can actually spend attacking.

But unlike some of the more situational racial changes, this one is easy to understand: Troll gets a longer offensive button.

For caster classes - including Forever's new Troll Warlock option - that immediately makes the race worth re-evaluating.

Undead: Touch of the Grave Can Proc More Often

Forsaken players also received a late buff.

Touch of the Grave's internal cooldown drops from 25 seconds to 15 seconds.

The passive already received behavioral cleanup during beta so it does not break crowd control or trigger from non-damaging abilities in unintended ways.

A shorter internal cooldown means more opportunities for the damage-and-healing effect to occur during sustained combat.

It is not the sort of change that makes an Undead Paladin suddenly mandatory. It does make the racial package noticeably more active.

Speaking of Forsaken Paladins, Blizzard just gave the combination its own lore foundation in Unbowed, the new short story about Cormack and the Forsaken relationship with the Holy Light.

Skyborne: Passive Haste Nerfed, Open-World Racials Get More Depth

Skyborne received the most complicated adjustment.

Wind-Blessed drops from 3% Haste to 2%. That is the simple part.

Read Leyline now increases Health and Mana regeneration by 50% for 15 seconds instead of the previous 100% version. If you activate it at an actual Ley Line, however, you gain Attuned for one hour, pushing the regeneration bonus back to 100%.

Skysight now gives 15% movement speed for 15 seconds instead of 10%. Using it at an elemental convergence grants Charged for one hour, increasing Skysight to 30% movement speed.

Both Attuned and Charged persist through death.

But Blizzard added one crucial clarification: both buffs are removed when you enter a raid.

That last line matters more than it looks.

It means Skyborne can have flavorful preparation and exploration advantages in the world without asking raiders to visit a Ley Line before every pull because the race otherwise sims higher.

That is a very sensible boundary.

Does This Make Skyborne Bad for Raiding?

No.

A permanent 2% Haste racial is still a meaningful combat passive, and Skyborne retain their broader racial package.

What Blizzard removed is the ability to bring the one-hour Attuned or Charged world-state bonuses into a raid.

The difference matters: 'Skyborne has a combat racial' is normal race design. 'Every Skyborne raider should visit a specific world object before raid night' would become a chore within about three resets.

The new version keeps the flavor while removing the most obvious mandatory-prep problem.

Who Gained the Most From the October 27 Update?

I would not publish a definitive racial tier list one week before launch when Blizzard is changing it twice in 24 hours.

But we can identify which specific class and race combinations gained the most obvious value from this pass.

  • Orc Hunter / Warlock — Why it gained value: Command returns with +5% pet damage and Blood Fury returns to a 2-minute cooldown.
  • Troll DPS / caster — Why it gained value: Berserking lasts 15 seconds instead of 10.
  • Dwarf physical/spell DPS — Why it gained value: Artisan's Precision provides a straightforward 1% hit bonus.
  • Human healer / Spirit user — Why it gained value: Human Spirit doubles to 10%, although Ruthless is halved.
  • Undead sustained-combat builds — Why it gained value: Touch of the Grave can trigger more often with a 15-second internal cooldown.
  • Tauren levelers / open-world players — Why it gained value: Plainsrunning can reach 60% movement speed before considering mounts.

Who Lost the Most?

The biggest losers are less about entire races and more about specific expectations.

  • Human DPS loses one percentage point of passive critical strike chance.
  • Orc non-pet classes lose Savage and receive no replacement passive throughput from Command.
  • Tauren loses the extra combat modifiers that had been attached to Endurance.
  • Skyborne loses one percentage point of passive Haste and cannot carry Attuned or Charged into raids.
  • Dwarf healers lose Earth Fury but gain a hit racial they may barely use.

That is why a single 'best race' ranking is so dangerous here. The same change can be a buff for one class and almost dead text for another.

Should You Change Your Race Before WoW Forever Launch?

For most players: no.

If you are trying to squeeze every possible percentage point out of a specific raid DPS setup, then yes, this pass is worth recalculating.

For everybody else, remember what Blizzard is explicitly trying to do: races are allowed to be better at different jobs.

That means the mathematically best race can change with your spec, content and even the encounter.

We also do not have real level-60 raid logs yet. Any racial tier list right now is a pre-launch forecast, not a solved meta.

Our WoW Forever Class Tier List follows the same rule: it separates what we actually know from the level-60 projections instead of pretending beta level 30 data is a final raid ranking.

Be Careful With Racial Tier Lists Published Before Today

This is the practical answer players actually need.

A racial guide updated on October 25 or even early October 27 can contain numbers that are already wrong.

For example, a list may still show:

  • Human Ruthless at 2% crit instead of 1%.
  • Dwarf Earth Fury instead of 1% Artisan's Precision hit.
  • Orc Savage instead of Command.
  • Blood Fury at a three-minute cooldown instead of two.
  • Troll Berserking at 10 seconds instead of 15.
  • Undead Touch of the Grave with a 25-second internal cooldown instead of 15.
  • Skyborne Wind-Blessed at 3% Haste instead of 2%.

If you are making a permanent character decision from a tier list, check the date before you check the letter grade.

This guide will use Blizzard's October 27 notes as the baseline until another pre-launch update replaces them.

Race Choice Matters More Because Forever Has New Class Combinations

Racial tuning would be easier to ignore if Forever had exactly the same race and class restrictions as original Classic.

It does not.

Human can now be Hunter. Dwarf can be Shaman. Gnome can be Priest. Orc can be Mage. Troll can be Warlock. Forsaken can be Paladin.

That means every racial change potentially creates new combinations Classic theorycrafters never had to evaluate.

Use our WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide to see every available combination before deciding whether a racial is even relevant to the class you want.

Then build the class itself in the WoW Forever Talent Calculator. A 1% racial advantage is not going to rescue a class or spec you do not enjoy playing.

Name Reservation Makes This Timing Extra Awkward

There is one reason today's tuning feels especially chaotic: Early Name Reservation also starts today.

Players are literally creating the characters they plan to play on November 4 while Blizzard is still editing the racial notes.

If you are reserving characters tonight, our WoW Forever Name Reservation Guide has the regional start times, three-character cap, rulesets and the new two-part naming system.

My recommendation is to reserve the race you genuinely want to play, not the race that gained one line in today's notes.

Blizzard has already shown that it is willing to tune racials aggressively. Your character model is going to outlive this week's spreadsheet.

What Blizzard Got Right - and What Still Looks Strange

I like the philosophy more than I like every individual implementation.

Removing weapon specializations is smart. It prevents race from deciding which raid weapons are allowed to be upgrades.

Keeping races different is also smart. I do not want every racial to become 'deal 1% more damage' with a different icon.

The weird part is Command.

Blizzard says it is moving away from racials that force one narrow gearing path, then gives Orc a passive that does nothing for several Orc classes and becomes very attractive for two pet classes.

That may still be fine. Identity does not require perfect symmetry.

But it is exactly the kind of choice that will create loud 'best race for Hunter' discussions once players reach 60.

Which, to be fair, is probably better than every race feeling identical.

WoW Forever Racial Changes FAQ

What changed with Human racials in WoW Forever?

Ruthless now grants 1% critical strike chance instead of 2%, while Human Spirit now increases Spirit by 10% instead of 5%.

What is the new Dwarf racial in WoW Forever?

Earth Fury has been removed and replaced by Artisan's Precision, which increases hit chance with spells and attacks by 1%.

How fast can Tauren Plainsrunning get?

The latest tuning gives 2% movement speed per stack for a maximum 60% increase. Plainsrunning no longer increases mounted movement speed.

Did Orc Blood Fury get nerfed?

The cooldown had been increased to three minutes in an earlier beta pass, but Blizzard's October 27 update restores it to two minutes.

What does Orc Command do?

Command increases Hunter and Warlock pet damage by 5%. It replaces the generic Savage 1% critical strike passive in the latest racial pass.

How was Troll Berserking changed?

Berserking now lasts 15 seconds instead of 10 seconds.

How was Touch of the Grave changed?

The Undead racial's internal cooldown is reduced from 25 seconds to 15 seconds, allowing it to trigger more frequently.

Did Skyborne get nerfed?

Wind-Blessed drops from 3% to 2% Haste. Read Leyline and Skysight receive new Ley Line and elemental-convergence interactions, but the one-hour Attuned and Charged buffs are removed when entering a raid.

Are weapon specialization racials coming back?

No. Blizzard specifically says it does not want Sword and Axe style racial specializations to make future raid and dungeon weapons feel required for specific races.

What is the best race in WoW Forever after these changes?

There is no single best race for every class and activity. The latest design intentionally allows races to be stronger in certain roles, and no live level-60 raid data exists yet.

Final Thoughts

I would love to tell you this is definitely the last racial article before November 4.

After the last 24 hours, I am not brave enough to promise that.

What we can say is that Blizzard's direction is finally clear.

Weapon-locking racials are out. Generic bonuses are being reduced where they flatten racial identity. More specialized bonuses are allowed to exist, even when that means one race is better for one specific role.

That creates some awkward combinations and plenty of theorycrafting arguments.

It also makes race choice feel like an actual choice.

Pick the character you want to look at for the next few years. Let the min-maxers fight over the last one percent.

And if Blizzard changes Blood Fury again tomorrow, at least the Orc still looks like an Orc.
