WoW Forever Name Reservation Starts Today - How to Reserve Your Character Name

9 min read

If you have been protecting the same character name since Vanilla, today is the day you find out whether somebody else has been protecting it too.

World of Warcraft: Forever Early Name Reservation begins on October 27, one week before the November 4 launch.

For European players, the doors open at 18:00 CET. North America starts at 1:00 p.m. PDT. Eligible players can create up to three characters during the reservation window, but that limit is shared across all rulesets rather than giving you three characters on every ruleset.

There is one major difference from a normal WoW launch, though.

Forever uses a two-part character naming system. Your complete name - effectively a first name plus a second name or surname - is the unique identity. That means losing a familiar first name is no longer automatically the end of the world.

Quick answer:
WoW Forever Early Name Reservation runs from October 27 through November 3. It starts in Europe at 18:00 CET and North America at 1:00 p.m. PDT. Eligible upgrade owners can create up to three characters total across all rulesets. Names are first-come, first-served, but the unique identifier is the full two-part character name rather than the first name alone.

WoW Forever Name Reservation Start Times

  • Europe — Start time: 18:00 CET — Date: October 27
  • North America — Start time: 1:00 p.m. PDT — Date: October 27
  • Korea — Start time: 07:00 KST — Date: October 28
  • Taiwan — Start time: 07:00 CST — Date: October 28

The reservation period remains open through November 3, immediately before WoW Forever launches globally on November 4.

If you are in Poland or most of Central Europe, Blizzard's 18:00 CET time is the one that matters today.

Who Can Reserve a WoW Forever Name Early?

Blizzard lists Early Name Reservation as a benefit of the paid WoW Forever upgrades.

The current reservation announcement specifically names the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack and limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection as qualifying options. The benefit applies to the specific WoW account where the upgrade was purchased.

If you are still trying to work out which bundle you own - or whether you needed to buy one at all - our WoW Forever Collector's Edition and upgrade guide breaks down the Heroic, Epic, Collection and Collector's Edition benefits.

One thing Blizzard's reservation announcement does not clearly spell out is whether an otherwise eligible account also needs active Game Time specifically to enter the pre-launch reservation client. Blizzard's main Forever page says the game itself requires a WoW Subscription or Game Time, but the reservation notice only explicitly lists the qualifying upgrade requirement.

Until Blizzard clarifies that edge case, I would not state that an active subscription is definitely required for the reservation window itself.

You Can Reserve Three Characters Total - Not Three Per Ruleset

This is the rule most likely to catch people who skimmed the announcement.

You can create up to three characters total during Early Name Reservation.

That cap is account-wide across the available rulesets.

So if you reserve two characters on PvP, you only have one reservation left for Normal, Roleplaying or another available ruleset.

The three-character restriction applies only to the Early Name Reservation period. It is not Forever's normal launch character limit.

Example:
Reserve two PvP characters and one Normal character, and you are done for the reservation window. You do not receive another three slots simply because you switch rulesets.

How to Reserve Your WoW Forever Character Name

Blizzard's setup process is straightforward, but there is no reason to be downloading the client at 17:59 if you care about a popular name.

  • Update your graphics drivers if needed.
  • Install or update the Battle.net desktop app.
  • Select World of Warcraft.
  • Use the Game Version menu above Play and select World of Warcraft: Forever.
  • Install the Forever client before the reservation window begins.
  • When reservations open, launch the client and choose your ruleset.
  • Create up to three characters using the names you want to secure.

The important final step is character creation. This is not a separate website form where you type three names and walk away. You create the characters in the client.

WoW Forever Uses Two-Part Character Names

This is where the name reservation race becomes much less brutal than Classic players may expect.

Every WoW Forever character has two parts to their name. Blizzard describes it like a first name and a surname.

The complete two-name combination is what must be unique within your region.

So if somebody has already created a character called Asha Brightvale, that does not necessarily prevent you from using Asha as your first name. You simply need a different valid second name.

That is a huge change from traditional WoW, where a single character name could be blocked because somebody on your realm created a level-one bank alt fifteen years ago.

Names Are Region-Wide, Not Traditional Realm Names

Forever is also moving away from the old realm-selection model.

Blizzard says the full two-part name is unique within a region. The game then organizes players into broader rulesets rather than asking them to pick a traditional realm first.

That means the logic is closer to:

  • Choose your ruleset.
  • Create your character.
  • Choose a two-part name.
  • The full combination must be available within the region.

The upside is that popular first names become much easier to keep. The downside is that the full identity you want is no longer protected by choosing an obscure realm.

Can You Hide the Second Name?

Yes - visually, at least.

Blizzard says you can disable your secondary name on your character's world nameplate through Game Menu > Options > Nameplates > My Secondary Name.

The second name still appears in chat because it remains part of your character's actual unique identity.

So if you want your character to look like 'Thrall' while running around rather than 'Thrall Definitelynotthrall', the UI gives you some control over how much of the full name you see.

What Naming Rules Still Apply?

The two-name system does not turn character creation into the Wild West.

Blizzard says the usual naming code of conduct still applies. Restricted words, impersonation attempts, confusing spellings and some repeated-character patterns can still be rejected.

The system also evaluates the two parts together.

In other words, splitting a prohibited term across the first and second name does not magically make it valid.

If your complete combination is already taken or rejected by the naming rules, you need another one.

Which Ruleset Should You Choose Before Reservations Open?

Do not make this decision while everybody else is already clicking Create Character.

Forever replaces traditional realms with rulesets built around playstyle.

  • Normal — Who it is for: Questing, dungeons, raids and optional PvP — Name reservation note: Safest general choice if you do not want permanent world-PvP pressure.
  • PvP — Who it is for: Open-world conflict and contested-zone danger — Name reservation note: Choose this only if you actually want the world-PvP ruleset long term.
  • Roleplaying — Who it is for: Players who want a more character/lore-focused community — Name reservation note: Two-part names fit RP particularly well because surnames and family names are supported.
  • Roleplay-PvP — Who it is for: Roleplay plus open-world PvP — Name reservation note: Blizzard announced it for launch and said it planned to include it in Early Name Reservation.

Hardcore is planned for after launch, so it is not part of the normal November 4 launch ruleset selection.

The practical lesson is simple: pick the ecosystem you actually want to live in. A perfect name on a ruleset you hate is not a win.

Choose Your Class Before You Reserve - Or At Least Narrow It Down

If you know exactly what you are playing, great. If not, today is a bad day to discover there are nine classes and several new race/class combinations.

Our WoW Forever Class Tier List is the fastest way to narrow down your main based on current pre-launch strength, while the WoW Forever Leveling Tier List focuses specifically on the 1-60 journey.

If race restrictions are the part you cannot remember, the WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide lists every confirmed combination, including Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Gnome Priest and Forsaken Paladin.

Do You Need to Perfect Character Appearance Immediately?

If the name matters more than the cheekbones, I would not spend the opening minute deciding between two nearly identical hairstyles.

The reservation system requires you to create the character, so there is naturally some pressure to get through character creation quickly.

Blizzard's announcement does not tell players to deliberately make placeholder appearances, and I would not recommend risky delete-and-recreate tricks with a name you genuinely care about.

The safer approach is to know your race, class and rough appearance before the window opens. If customization can be changed later through the game's normal appearance tools, treat that as a bonus rather than a reason to gamble with the reservation.

Yes, but understand what the new naming system changes.

In old WoW, a name like Arthas, Jaina or Legolas would disappear instantly because the single word was the entire unique identity.

In Forever, somebody taking your preferred first name does not automatically block you. What matters is the full two-part combination.

That means there is much less reason to panic over common first names and much more reason to think about a second name you actually like.

For roleplayers, that is great.

For people who have been using the same one-word handle for twenty years, it may take some adjustment.

My Launch-Day Preparation Checklist

  • Install and patch the Forever client before the reservation time.
  • Write down three full two-part names in priority order.
  • Have one or two backup second names for each character.
  • Choose your ruleset before logging in.
  • Decide the race/class combination for at least your first character.
  • Do not use all three reservations on random alts if one slot needs to be saved for a friend/guild plan.
  • Check that the upgrade benefit is on the correct WoW account.

You can also build your intended character ahead of time in the WoW Forever Talent Calculator so the class choice is not being made while the reservation clock is already running.

What Happens After November 3?

Early Name Reservation ends on November 3.

WoW Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026.

The special three-character reservation cap only applies to the early window. Blizzard explicitly describes it as an Early Name Reservation restriction, not the normal post-launch character limit.

The reserved characters are therefore effectively your launch roster waiting for the game to open.

Do You Need to Buy WoW Forever to Play on November 4?

No - and this distinction matters.

WoW Forever itself is included with a normal World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time when it launches.

The paid Heroic/Epic/Collection upgrades are optional extras that include things such as Skyborne access, cosmetics and Early Name Reservation.

We explain that distinction in detail in our WoW Forever Collector's Edition guide.

So if you do not care about reserving a name early, you do not need to buy an upgrade just to access Forever on launch day.

Final Thoughts

I expected WoW Forever name reservation to be the usual launch-week panic: log in, type the name you have used since 2005, discover a level-one Gnome took it three seconds ago, and begin bargaining with the universe.

The two-name system changes that more than I expected.

Popular first names still matter, but they are no longer the entire identity. A good second name gives you another route to keep the character name you actually care about, and for roleplayers it makes character creation much more flexible.

The real thing to avoid today is indecision.

Install the client early. Pick your ruleset. Know your first three characters. Have backup surnames.

Then at 18:00 CET, the only boss mechanic left is Battle.net.
