WoW Forever Profession Tier List - Best Professions for Gold, Leveling and Endgame
Dariz · 10/26/2026
Take Engineering if you care about PvP. Take Alchemy if you raid. Take the profession that makes your armor while leveling. Put gathering on an alt when you can afford to.
WoW Forever keeps that familiar skeleton, but Blizzard has added enough new recipes, crafted gear and Camping utility that the old one-line answers are no longer quite good enough.
Every primary profession now contributes something at a campsite. Crafting professions have many more recipes. Some crafted pieces are specifically valuable because the crafter is the one who can use them. And because Forever is launching on fresh realms, gathering professions may be worth more in the first few weeks than they will be six months later.
So this tier list uses one rule throughout: rank the profession for what it actually does for your character, then separate that from gold-making and leveling value.
Quick answer:
Engineering and Alchemy are our S-tier overall professions. Engineering offers the strongest unique utility, especially for PvP and difficult group content, while Alchemy stays valuable because consumables are always used. Enchanting and Blacksmithing sit in A tier. Tailoring and Leatherworking are strong B-tier professions with excellent class-specific value. Mining, Herbalism and Skinning are B tier overall but can become S-tier gold professions on fresh realms.
WoW Forever Overall Profession Tier List
- S — Professions: Engineering, Alchemy — WoWStats verdict: The strongest long-term personal utility. Engineering has unique gadgets; Alchemy has permanent consumable demand.
- A — Professions: Enchanting, Blacksmithing — WoWStats verdict: Excellent main-character value through permanent upgrades, crafted gear and strong self-sufficiency.
- B — Professions: Tailoring, Leatherworking, Mining, Herbalism, Skinning — WoWStats verdict: Useful and often excellent for a specific class or economy goal, but less universal as a permanent endgame profession.
S Tier - Engineering
Engineering is still the profession I expect the most competitive players to stare at first.
The reason is the same one that has kept Engineering relevant through every Classic-style version of WoW: it gives you tools other professions simply do not replicate.
Bombs, grenades, goggles, utility gadgets and PvP toys are useful because they add buttons to your character instead of only improving something you could already buy from another player.
Koroboost ranks Engineering as the only S-tier profession in its current overall list. MMonster is more conservative for gold and puts it behind Alchemy at level 60, which I agree with economically. But for personal power and utility, Engineering has the stronger argument.
Forever also gives Engineering a camp role. Blizzard's October 21 Camping overview confirms that Engineers can deploy a Reagent Bot at skill 20, letting nearby players buy reagents. Higher-rank profession objects add more utility later.
The downside has not changed: Engineering eats materials and gold. If you are leveling it on your first character, pairing it with Mining makes the journey dramatically less painful.
Best for:
PvP, melee and Hunter mains, players who value unique utility, and anyone who enjoys having a bag full of buttons that may or may not explode.
S Tier - Alchemy
Alchemy is the safest profession in the game if your definition of value is 'will people still need what I make next month?'
Potions, elixirs and flasks get consumed. That sounds obvious, but it is the entire reason Alchemy survives every economy cycle better than many gear-crafting professions.
MMonster currently ranks Alchemy as the best profession for long-term gold and the best profession at level 60. ClassicWoWForever also moves Alchemy into many raid combinations, while Koroboost keeps it in A rather than S because it values Engineering's unique combat utility more heavily.
That disagreement is exactly why both professions sit in our S tier: Engineering is harder to replace personally; Alchemy is easier to monetize continuously.
Alchemy also gets the Mana Well Camping feature, granting mana regeneration that is mutually exclusive with Blessing of Wisdom. That will not make every raid require an Alchemist, but it makes the profession useful even before you open your bags.
Pair it with Herbalism if this is your first character and you would rather gather your own reagents than fund the Auction House.
Best for:
Raiders, healers and mana users, long-term gold makers, and players who want a profession that creates things people repeatedly consume.
A Tier - Enchanting
Enchanting is much more attractive in Forever than a simple 'disenchant old gear and sell weapon enchants' summary suggests.
It still has the classic advantage of turning unwanted gear into materials and giving you access to permanent character upgrades. Forever also expands profession recipes and crafted equipment, which gives Enchanting more reasons to exist during the leveling journey.
Koroboost places Enchanting in A tier, and that is where we land as well. It is not as universally unique as Engineering or as permanently consumed as Alchemy, but almost every serious character wants enchants.
The profession also pairs naturally with Tailoring because neither requires a gathering slot and Tailoring creates items you can disenchant.
At camps, the Enchanted Lute can grant armor, stats and resistances, although the effect is mutually exclusive with Mark of the Wild.
Best for:
Cloth casters, players who hate wasting green gear, long-term service gold and anyone leveling Tailoring at the same time.
A Tier - Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing has one enormous advantage in Forever: crafted gear matters while you are still leveling.
This is important because the value of a crafting profession changes completely when the items are not just skill-up junk you replace two quests later.
The supplied ClassicWoWForever profession data argues that Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and Tailoring all gain meaningful bind-on-pickup gear lines for the classes that wear their armor. MMonster also rates Blacksmithing highly at level 60, especially for Warriors and Paladins.
If you are leveling a Warrior or Paladin on a fresh realm, Mining plus Blacksmithing is probably the most satisfying self-contained profession pair. You find ore, turn it into gear and actually wear the result.
Blacksmithing's early camp feature is a Sharpening Wheel that grants Strength and does not stack with Strength of Earth Totem.
Best for:
Warrior and Paladin mains, fresh-realm self-sufficiency, crafted weapons and armor, and players who want their profession to visibly improve their leveling gear.
B Tier - Tailoring
Tailoring is better than a generic B-tier label makes it sound.
For Mage, Priest and Warlock, it can easily be an A-tier personal profession because it creates the armor type you actually wear and does not require a gathering profession.
The reason it sits in B overall is universality. A Warrior gains almost nothing from Tailoring as a main profession, while Engineering or Alchemy helps almost every class.
Tailoring also has excellent synergy with Enchanting: turn cloth into gear, disenchant the gear, and feed the enchanting materials back into your second profession.
Its Camping contribution is a Faction Banner that grants Spirit and is mutually exclusive with Divine Spirit.
Best for:
Mage, Priest and Warlock; players pairing it with Enchanting; and anyone who wants crafted cloth gear without using a gathering slot.
B Tier - Leatherworking
Leatherworking is the equivalent recommendation for Druid, Hunter, Rogue and Shaman.
It benefits from a large crafting pool and supports both leather and mail users. ClassicWoWForever's current data gives Leatherworking more than one hundred leather pieces plus additional mail recipes, making it much more relevant to the 1-60 journey than Vanilla players may remember.
Its natural pair is Skinning, which is almost frictionless while leveling because you are already killing beasts.
The Camp Tent is also one of the more interesting profession utilities: Blizzard says sitting near it can add rested experience equal to 5% of a level if you are below that rested threshold.
That is not enough to make Leatherworking the best universal profession, but it is exactly the kind of Forever-specific utility that makes profession choices feel less cosmetic.
Best for:
Druid, Hunter, Rogue and Shaman leveling; fresh characters who want self-made armor; and players pairing it with Skinning.
B Tier - Mining
Mining is one of the professions most likely to outperform its tier during launch week.
A fresh realm needs ore for Blacksmithing and Engineering, and both are popular professions. That makes Mining one of the safest first-character economy picks even if you intend to drop it later.
MMonster ranks Mining highly for gold and recommends it with Blacksmithing or Engineering. The fresh WoW-Professions route also notes that Mining feeds both crafts and includes new Forever ores and bars.
Mining is lower in the overall table because gathering itself gives fewer permanent personal tools than a maxed crafting profession.
Its Camping object, the Lodestone, grants melee attack power and is mutually exclusive with Blessing of Might.
Best for:
Fresh-server gold, Warriors/Paladins leveling Blacksmithing, Engineering users and first characters who want reliable materials.
B Tier - Herbalism
Herbalism trainer and skill guide makes Herbalism an easy partner for Alchemy and one of the safest gathering choices at launch.
Herbs have a structural advantage: potions and elixirs are consumed. A Blacksmith might sell you one sword; an Alchemist can sell you another stack of consumables next week.
MMonster therefore ranks Herbalism alongside Alchemy at the top of its gold list.
We are more cautious before the economy actually exists. Launch prices depend on population, farming routes and how aggressively players choose Alchemy. But if I wanted one gathering profession specifically to turn into a long-term gold pair, Herbalism would be my first choice.
Herbalism's Incense Candle grants Intellect at a camp and is mutually exclusive with Arcane Intellect.
Best for:
Alchemy mains, launch-week gathering, caster-friendly campsite utility and players who enjoy farming while questing.
B Tier - Skinning
Skinning trainer and skill guide is the easiest gathering profession to recommend to a player who does not want to think about gathering.
You kill a beast. You skin the beast. You keep walking.
That simplicity is why MMonster calls Skinning the most passive gathering income while leveling, and why ClassicWoWForever frequently pairs it with Leatherworking.
On a fresh realm, leather demand should be strong because Leatherworking supports four classes. The question is whether the supply becomes enormous too, because so many players can skin the same types of leveling mobs.
Its Camp Chair grants 2% critical strike chance and is exclusive with Moonkin Aura, making it one of the more immediately understandable camp benefits.
Best for:
Druid/Hunter/Rogue/Shaman leveling, passive income and players who want a gathering profession without detouring for nodes.
Best WoW Forever Professions for Gold
This is the ranking most likely to change after launch because we do not have a live level-60 Auction House yet.
For the first days of a fresh realm, I would rather own materials than guess which crafted item the market has not already flooded.
- S — Professions: Herbalism, Mining, Skinning — Why: Fresh-realm materials, low startup cost and immediate demand from crafting professions.
- A — Professions: Alchemy, Enchanting — Why: Repeat consumable demand and evergreen upgrade services become stronger as players reach endgame.
- B — Professions: Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring — Why: Can make excellent money with rare recipes, but profit depends more on recipe access and material margins.
- C — Professions: Engineering — Why: Amazing profession, poor default gold profession because many of its best items are personal utility or expensive to produce.
Our gold take:
Launch week and long-term gold are different games. Gathering is safest on day one. Once raiding begins on December 9, Alchemy should gain value because consumables have repeat demand.
Best Professions While Leveling
For leveling, the strongest profession is usually the one that fits your armor and does not force you to abandon your route every fifteen minutes.
- Warrior / Paladin — Recommended pair: Mining + Blacksmithing — Why: Ore feeds useful mail/plate gear and weapons.
- Druid / Hunter / Rogue / Shaman — Recommended pair: Skinning + Leatherworking — Why: Your normal quest kills provide the materials for your own armor.
- Mage / Priest / Warlock — Recommended pair: Tailoring + Enchanting — Why: Cloth needs no gathering slot; crafted pieces can feed Enchanting.
- Gold-first alt — Recommended pair: Two gathering professions — Why: Sell materials instead of investing in expensive skill-ups early.
If you are still choosing the class behind those professions, use our WoW Forever Class Tier List and WoW Forever Leveling Tier List before locking in your first character.
Best Professions at Level 60
- S — Professions: Engineering, Alchemy — Why: Unique combat utility plus constant raid consumable demand.
- A — Professions: Enchanting, Blacksmithing — Why: Permanent gear upgrades and valuable crafted equipment.
- B — Professions: Tailoring, Leatherworking — Why: Strong when their class-specific crafted items remain relevant.
- C — Professions: Mining, Herbalism, Skinning — Why: Still excellent for economy, but often moved to alts once the main wants two endgame crafts.
This is the category where the classic 'drop your gathering profession later' advice starts making sense.
A main character can gather ore perfectly well, but a dedicated alt can gather the same ore. An Engineer's unique gadgets or an Alchemist's personal profession access are harder to outsource when you specifically want those tools on your main.
Best Professions for PvP
Engineering is the clear first pick.
Grenades, mobility tools, control gadgets and odd utility have historically been worth more in PvP than a simple stat advantage because they create opportunities your class does not naturally have.
Alchemy is the natural second profession if consumables remain usable in the content you care about, while gathering professions mostly support the economy rather than the fight itself.
- S — Professions: Engineering
- A — Professions: Alchemy
- B — Professions: Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Leatherworking, Tailoring
- C — Professions: Mining, Herbalism, Skinning
Best Profession Pair for Every Class
- Warrior — Leveling pair: Mining + Blacksmithing — Endgame direction: Engineering + Blacksmithing/Alchemy depending on PvP vs PvE priorities.
- Paladin — Leveling pair: Mining + Blacksmithing — Endgame direction: Alchemy is excellent for raid play; Engineering is stronger for PvP/utility.
- Hunter — Leveling pair: Skinning + Leatherworking — Endgame direction: Engineering becomes extremely attractive at 60.
- Rogue — Leveling pair: Skinning + Leatherworking — Endgame direction: Engineering is the obvious competitive PvP swap.
- Priest — Leveling pair: Tailoring + Enchanting — Endgame direction: Keep Tailoring/Enchanting if crafted gear matters; Alchemy is a strong raid alternative.
- Shaman — Leveling pair: Skinning + Leatherworking — Endgame direction: Alchemy works naturally for healers/casters; Engineering for PvP.
- Mage — Leveling pair: Tailoring + Enchanting — Endgame direction: Alchemy or Engineering can replace a slot depending on raids vs PvP.
- Warlock — Leveling pair: Tailoring + Enchanting — Endgame direction: Alchemy for consumables or Engineering for PvP utility.
- Druid — Leveling pair: Skinning + Leatherworking — Endgame direction: Alchemy is a very safe endgame choice; Engineering for competitive PvP.
Race restrictions can also change which class/profession combination feels best. Our WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide lists every confirmed launch combination.
Once you have a class in mind, you can build it in our WoW Forever Talent Calculator before deciding whether you want a gear-crafting profession or a more competitive Engineering/Alchemy setup.
Do Secondary Professions Matter?
Yes - and there is very little reason to skip them because they do not use your two primary profession slots.
Blizzard's current Forever Camping guide confirms that every character can learn Cooking, Fishing and First Aid.
- Cooking — Why it matters: Creates the Basic Campfire and useful food; the core profession behind the entire Camping system. — Guide: WoW-Professions Cooking 1-300
- Fishing — Why it matters: Feeds Cooking and provides the Fishing Bowl camp feature with an 8% stats buff exclusive with Blessing of Kings. — Guide: WoW-Professions Fishing 1-300
- First Aid — Why it matters: Bandages, healing items and a First Aid Kit that provides Stamina at camps, exclusive with Power Word: Fortitude. — Guide: WoW-Professions First Aid 1-300
Level Cooking 1-300, Fishing 1-300 and First Aid 1-300 on your main if you have the time. There is no primary-profession opportunity cost.
Camping Makes Every Profession More Useful
This is the biggest reason old Classic profession rankings do not map perfectly onto Forever.
Blizzard's October 21 Camping article confirms that every primary profession gets a camp feature, starting at skill 20, while more advanced blueprints can come from dungeons and raids.
- Alchemy — Early camp feature: Mana Well — Benefit: Mana regeneration; exclusive with Blessing of Wisdom.
- Blacksmithing — Early camp feature: Sharpening Wheel — Benefit: Strength; exclusive with Strength of Earth Totem.
- Enchanting — Early camp feature: Enchanted Lute — Benefit: Armor, stats and resistances; exclusive with Mark of the Wild.
- Engineering — Early camp feature: Reagent Bot — Benefit: Lets nearby players purchase reagents.
- Herbalism — Early camp feature: Incense Candle — Benefit: Intellect; exclusive with Arcane Intellect.
- Leatherworking — Early camp feature: Camp Tent — Benefit: Adds rested XP up to 5% of a level.
- Mining — Early camp feature: Lodestone — Benefit: Melee attack power; exclusive with Blessing of Might.
- Skinning — Early camp feature: Camp Chair — Benefit: 2% crit; exclusive with Moonkin Aura.
- Tailoring — Early camp feature: Faction Banner — Benefit: Spirit; exclusive with Divine Spirit.
The important word is exclusive. These are alternatives to equivalent class buffs, not extra bonuses you stack on top of them.
That is good design for Forever because it makes professions socially useful without turning every raid into a checklist of nine mandatory profession buffs.
How Professions Connect to Legacy Progression
Crafting professions also matter outside gear and gold.
Blizzard's Legacy system can be unlocked through profession progression, and current profession data awards account-wide progress for reaching major crafting milestones.
That gives profession completionists a reason to eventually level more trades across alts, even if your main settles on Engineering and Alchemy at 60.
For the broader profession changes - including Camping, new recipes and Legacy progression - see our earlier WoW Forever Changes Explained.
How to Level WoW Forever Professions 1-300
For actual skill routes, material lists and trainer locations, I would not reinvent the wheel inside a tier list.
WoW-Professions has dedicated Forever routes and is actively marking which sections were beta-tested and which 225-300 ranges still need live verification.
- Alchemy 1-300
- Blacksmithing 1-300
- Enchanting 1-300
- Engineering 1-300
- Leatherworking 1-300
- Tailoring 1-300
- Mining 1-300

What Profession Should You Pick on Your First Character?
If you want the most practical answer rather than the mathematically pure answer, use your armor type.
- Warrior or Paladin: Mining + Blacksmithing.
- Druid, Hunter, Rogue or Shaman: Skinning + Leatherworking.
- Mage, Priest or Warlock: Tailoring + Enchanting.
That gives your first character a profession loop that naturally fits the 1-60 journey.
Once you have gold, materials and alts, then you can start optimizing the main for Engineering, Alchemy or whatever the actual level-60 meta demands.
Dropping a profession at 60 is annoying. Spending fifty hours leveling with two professions that do nothing for you because a pre-launch tier list said they were 'S' is worse.
WoW Forever Profession Tier List FAQ
What is the best profession in WoW Forever?
Engineering is our best profession for unique personal utility, while Alchemy is the safest all-around profession for consumables and long-term gold. Both are S tier for different reasons.
What is the best WoW Forever profession for gold?
At launch, gathering professions such as Herbalism, Mining and Skinning are the safest bets because every crafter needs materials. Long term, Alchemy is likely to become one of the strongest gold professions because consumables are repeatedly used.
What is the best profession for leveling?
Use the profession that makes your armor together with its gathering partner: Blacksmithing + Mining for Warrior/Paladin, Leatherworking + Skinning for leather/mail classes, and Tailoring + Enchanting for cloth casters.
Is Engineering mandatory in WoW Forever?
No. Engineering is extremely strong for PvP and unique utility, but calling it mandatory before level-60 live data exists would be misleading.
Is Alchemy better than Engineering?
For gold and raid consumables, usually yes. For unique combat utility and PvP, Engineering has the advantage. Your goal matters more than the letter grade.
Can I learn every profession in WoW Forever?
A character can learn two primary professions and all three secondary professions: Cooking, Fishing and First Aid.
What is the profession skill cap in WoW Forever?
Primary and secondary professions follow the Classic-style progression to a 300 skill cap, with Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Artisan ranks.
Do gathering professions have Camping bonuses?
Yes. Herbalism, Mining and Skinning each have profession-specific camp objects, so gathering professions contribute more than materials.
Should I use a Classic Era profession leveling guide for Forever?
Not blindly. Forever changes recipes, skill ranges and profession content. Use a Forever-specific route when one exists.
Final Thoughts
Forever has done something I did not expect: it has made profession choice interesting before the game is even live.
Engineering and Alchemy are still the obvious endgame monsters. That part feels familiar.
What is different is everything underneath them.
A Leatherworker can help your leveling path and add rested experience at camp. A Miner is not just the person farming your Engineering mats; the profession contributes group utility too. Blacksmithing has more reasons to exist before level 60. Secondary professions are tied directly into the Camping system.
My advice for November 4 is not to over-optimize your first character.
Pick a profession pair that supports the journey, make some gold, learn how Forever's recipes actually work and let the live economy tell us what is truly S tier.
Then, when the first raid opens on December 9 and everyone suddenly needs consumables at the same time, the Alchemists can pretend they knew all along.
