WoW Forever Launch Sends WoW Past 1.1 Million Twitch Viewers - First Issues, Hotfixes and Auction House Surprise

11 min read

World of Warcraft: Forever has finally launched, and for once the first boss was not a four-hour login queue.

Blizzard opened the game globally on November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST - midnight on November 5 in Central Europe - and the initial response was enormous.

The World of Warcraft category on Twitch reportedly peaked at 1,108,474 viewers during the launch window. That put the game within roughly 27,000 viewers of its all-time Twitch peak from the 2019 WoW Classic launch.

At the same time, the launch itself was surprisingly functional. Queues existed, but early reports described them as short rather than catastrophic. The more interesting problems appeared after players got inside: some areas felt too empty because of layering, transport systems misbehaved, several quests and NPCs needed hotfixes, and the Auction House started charging a minimum one-silver deposit even for extremely cheap items.

In other words, Forever did not launch perfectly. It launched like World of Warcraft - just without the traditional evening spent staring at a queue number.

Quick answer:
WoW Forever launched globally on November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST / November 5 at 00:00 CET. The World of Warcraft Twitch category reportedly reached 1,108,474 concurrent viewers around launch, about 26,700 below WoW's all-time Twitch peak. Blizzard is already tracking launch bugs and has shipped its first hotfixes. A separate live-server oddity currently gives Auction House listings a minimum 1-silver deposit, but Blizzard has not confirmed whether that behavior is intentional.

WoW Forever Came Very Close to WoW Classic's Twitch Record

The most spectacular launch number is the Twitch peak.

MMORPG.org.pl cites TwitchTracker data showing 1,108,474 concurrent viewers for World of Warcraft around the Forever launch.

For context, TwitchTracker lists World of Warcraft's historical peak at 1,135,186 viewers on August 26, 2019 - the launch day of WoW Classic.

The difference is only 26,712 viewers.

That is an absurdly small gap for a 22-year-old MMO franchise launching another version of Azeroth.

But there is one important correction to make before the marketing machine runs away with the number.

TwitchTracker tracks the World of Warcraft game category. It does not give Forever its own separate category in the data being cited here.

So we can safely say the WoW category passed 1.1 million viewers during the Forever launch and that Forever was the obvious reason for the spike. We cannot turn that into a precise statement that 1,108,474 people were simultaneously watching only Forever streams.

  • WoW Forever launch window — Peak viewers: 1,108,474 reported — Context: World of Warcraft category peak cited from TwitchTracker during Forever launch.
  • WoW all-time peak — Peak viewers: 1,135,186 — Context: TwitchTracker record from August 26, 2019, when WoW Classic launched.
  • Difference — Peak viewers: 26,712 — Context: Forever-era launch spike came within about 2.4% of the all-time WoW record.

That Number Is Viewership, Not Player Count

A Twitch viewer is not the same thing as a WoW Forever player.

Some people were watching streams while waiting to log in. Some were there for launch hype. Some were chasing Twitch Drops. Some could have been watching another version of WoW under the same category.

Blizzard has not published a verified WoW Forever concurrent-player number or first-24-hours player total.

So claims that Forever launched with 'millions of players' remain speculation unless Blizzard releases actual account or concurrency data.

The Twitch result still matters. It tells us that attention around the launch was enormous. It just does not tell us exactly how many people logged in.

The Twitch Drop Probably Helped - But It Does Not Explain Everything

Blizzard also ran a launch Twitch promotion.

Watching four hours of eligible World of Warcraft content between November 4 and November 12 earns the temporary Pouch of Violet Dust toy for Forever.

The toy turns a campfire purple and extends camp benefits by one hour, for a two-hour total duration. Blizzard says the item itself is temporary and will disappear after the launch celebration in early December.

That absolutely gives players another reason to leave a stream running. It does not make a 1.1-million category peak meaningless.

Drops are normal around major launches. Getting close to WoW Classic's historical record still shows that Forever converted years of Classic+ discussion into a very large launch-night audience.

The Launch Was Surprisingly Smooth

The second surprise was what did not happen.

There was no universal four-hour queue apocalypse.

Icy Veins reported that queues were generally manageable and often stayed below roughly ten minutes during the early launch period. Executive Producer Holly Longdale also said the team had prepared contingencies after seeing how extreme the beta population became.

That does not mean nobody encountered queues or disconnects. It means the overall story was dramatically better than the stereotype attached to major WoW launches.

Blizzard's realmless ruleset structure and aggressive layering appear to have absorbed much of the initial demand.

Layering Solved One Problem and Created Another

Then the trade-off became obvious.

Some players started asking why supposedly packed cities or zones felt strangely empty.

Blizzard acknowledged that certain areas were not feeling as populated as intended and said it would adjust the numbers.

Too little layering and everybody fights over the same quest mob while servers melt. Too much layering and the biggest MMO launch of the year somehow makes Stormwind feel like 4 a.m. on a Tuesday.

The good news is that this is exactly the kind of problem Blizzard can tune without redesigning the game.

Blizzard Has Already Published a Known Issues List

The official known-issues thread is intentionally not comprehensive. Blizzard says it lists problems that are notable, impactful and already being tracked for future fixes.

As of the November 5 update, the confirmed list includes:

  • Dungeons — Confirmed issue: Razorfen Kraul cauldron near Roogug can trap players — What players should know: Avoid jumping into suspicious dungeon cookware, apparently.
  • Gamepad — Confirmed issue: Deleting more than one rare/epic item may generate an error — What players should know: Relevant to the new official controller workflow.
  • Gamepad — Confirmed issue: Push-to-talk keyboard instructions may appear when joining voice — What players should know: UI issue rather than a gameplay blocker.
  • NPCs — Confirmed issue: PvP vendors temporarily unavailable in Orgrimmar, Stormwind and Dalaran — What players should know: PvP purchases may need to wait for a fix.
  • NPCs — Confirmed issue: Stormwind guards point to the wrong Transmog NPC name — What players should know: The correct NPC is Fyrenz Vishonar.
  • UI — Confirmed issue: Bank pages/tabs can render outside the expected frame — What players should know: Visual/UI issue affecting bank navigation.
  • World — Confirmed issue: Stormwind Keep entrance can show flashing/unintended textures — What players should know: Graphics issue tracked by Blizzard.

The Ashenvale quest Vorsha the Lasher appeared on the original list because it could cause a crash, but Blizzard has since struck that entry from the current known-issues post. I would therefore not present it as an active confirmed problem anymore.

The First WoW Forever Hotfixes Are Already Live

Blizzard has also moved from tracking problems to fixing them.

The first official hotfix batch, dated November 5, addresses NPC spawns, trade-supply vendors, PvP behavior and quest bottlenecks.

  • Yarrog Baneshadow in Durotar now respawns faster.
  • Lotheluum Starbreeze on Zephras now trains Druids correctly.
  • Some Dustwallow Marsh murlocs no longer respawn too quickly.
  • Pelluk in Swamp of Sorrows should spawn correctly.
  • Zephras Isle trade supply vendors now sell apprentice tradeskill bags.
  • Deathstalker Erland respawns much faster for Escorting Erland.
  • Plainsrunning can no longer be stacked during battleground preparation or while carrying a flag.
  • Mild Spices now vendor for 1 copper instead of 2 copper.

None of those individually changes the game. Collectively, they are exactly what you want to see in the first 24 hours: obvious launch friction being patched instead of waiting for a weekly maintenance window.

Invite-a-Friend Had a Much Bigger Launch Bug - and It Was Fixed

One early issue was more serious than a slow quest mob.

Players entering Forever through Invite-a-Friend launch codes were unexpectedly restricted from chat channels, leveling beyond level 10, joining guilds, forming parties and trading.

Blizzard says that issue was fixed with a hotfix on November 5.

That matters because launch codes were specifically sold as a way to bring friends into Forever for the opening week. A friend invite that prevents you from grouping with your friend is almost impressively self-defeating.

The Auction House Has a 1-Silver Minimum Deposit

The strangest launch-day economy story arrived after the servers had already been live for a while.

Wowhead found that listing an item on the Forever Auction House currently requires a deposit of at least one silver.

Normally, Classic-style Auction House deposits are based on vendor value and listing duration. For cheap low-level materials, food or crafted items, that can produce a deposit below one silver.

Forever appears to put a one-silver floor underneath that calculation.

Wowhead's example uses an item with a vendor price of 4 silver and 61 copper. An eight-hour listing would normally calculate to 92 copper, but Forever asks for one silver.

For a level-60 character, the difference is noise. For a level-8 character trying to pay for skills and bags, one silver can be a meaningful percentage of your wallet.

Important:
Blizzard has not confirmed that the 1-silver minimum is an intentional Forever economy rule. The same behavior appeared during beta and was reported as a bug. Wowhead notes that the modern Retail client has historically used a 1-silver minimum, so this may be inherited client behavior rather than a deliberate Forever design decision.

How Auction House Deposits Work

  • 2 hours — Classic-style deposit: 5% of vendor price — Forever live behavior: Calculated deposit, but apparently not below 1 silver.
  • 8 hours — Classic-style deposit: 20% of vendor price — Forever live behavior: Calculated deposit, but apparently not below 1 silver.
  • 24 hours — Classic-style deposit: 60% of vendor price — Forever live behavior: Calculated deposit, but apparently not below 1 silver.

The deposit is returned if the auction sells. You lose it if the auction expires or you cancel it.

That means the real danger is not paying one silver once. It is repeatedly listing low-value items that nobody buys.

What Should You Do With Cheap Items Right Now?

Until Blizzard says whether the minimum is intended, I would be conservative.

  • Check the deposit before posting anything cheap.
  • Do not automatically list every low-level green simply because it is Bind on Equip.
  • Compare the guaranteed vendor price with the realistic Auction House profit.
  • For stackable materials, larger stacks may make the one-silver floor less painful per item.
  • Trade Chat or guild trading can make sense for low-margin profession materials.
  • Do not cancel and relist cheap auctions constantly; every failed listing can eat the deposit.

This matters especially on a fresh economy, because one of the classic launch loops is selling cloth, ore, herbs, bags and random green items to finance training.

If you are choosing professions specifically to make early gold, our WoW Forever Profession Tier List explains why gathering is so valuable early even when crafting professions rank higher for long-term character power.

Is the Auction House Deposit Bad for the Economy?

It is too early to answer that responsibly.

The immediate downside is easy to see. A one-silver floor discourages extremely cheap listings and makes early crafting margins harder.

The possible upside is that it also discourages endless cancel-and-relist behavior and thousands of tiny low-value auctions.

But those are design arguments. Right now we do not even know whether this is the design.

Until Blizzard confirms the rule, I would not write an angry economic obituary around behavior that may disappear in the next hotfix.

This Is Why Launch-Day Guides Need Dates

Forever has already changed enough in 48 hours to make undated advice dangerous.

An article written before launch can tell you a quest NPC exists, while the live server may have that NPC disabled. A beta economy guide can recommend selling every low-level material, while the live Auction House may charge a deposit large enough to erase the margin.

That does not make pre-launch guides useless. It means the launch has moved Forever from theorycrafting to real data.

Our WoW Forever Beginner Guide remains the main overview for new players, but we will keep updating individual systems as live behavior replaces beta assumptions.

The Twitch Number Shows Why Forever Matters for WoW

Even if you ignore the exact peak, the launch has answered one question very quickly.

There is a large audience for a version of World of Warcraft that is not Retail and is not simply replaying an old expansion on schedule.

Forever is trying to occupy the space players have called Classic+ for years: level 60 stays relevant, Azeroth keeps expanding horizontally, old areas matter, classes change without becoming modern WoW classes, and the game gets major updates rather than ending after Naxxramas.

Blizzard currently targets major Forever content cycles roughly every four months. We broke down that plan in WoW Forever's Four-Month Update Schedule.

A giant launch-night Twitch spike does not prove that model will work for years. Retention will matter much more than launch hype. But it does prove Blizzard has people's attention.

The Real Test Starts After the Hype

This is where I would push back on headlines saying Forever has already 'taken over the MMO market.'

A launch can be huge and still fade. The harder job is keeping players in Elwynn, Durotar, dungeons, professions and raids after the launch-week streamers move to something else.

The first signs are promising: Blizzard avoided a major queue disaster, hotfixes started quickly, and the audience showed up.

Now the game has to earn month two.

WoW Forever Launch FAQ

How many Twitch viewers did WoW Forever get at launch?

MMORPG.org.pl cites TwitchTracker data showing the World of Warcraft category peaking at 1,108,474 viewers during the Forever launch window. Because TwitchTracker measures the overall WoW category, this should not be described as a verified Forever-only viewer count.

What is the all-time World of Warcraft Twitch record?

TwitchTracker currently lists 1,135,186 peak viewers on August 26, 2019, the launch day of WoW Classic.

Did WoW Forever have long launch queues?

Some queues existed, but early launch reports described them as relatively short compared with notorious WoW launch days. Blizzard used layering and launch contingencies to absorb the initial load.

What are the main WoW Forever known issues?

Blizzard's current official list includes a Razorfen Kraul trap spot, gamepad/UI errors, unavailable PvP vendors, a bank-page UI problem and visual issues at Stormwind Keep. The list is not comprehensive and is updated over time.

Has Blizzard already released WoW Forever hotfixes?

Yes. The first November 5 hotfixes addressed NPC and quest respawn issues, tradeskill bag vendors, Plainsrunning behavior in battlegrounds and other launch problems.

Why does the WoW Forever Auction House require 1 silver?

Live servers currently appear to impose a minimum one-silver Auction House deposit. Blizzard has not confirmed whether this is intentional; it may be inherited from modern-client behavior.

Do you get the Auction House deposit back?

Yes, if the auction sells. The deposit is lost when an auction expires or is cancelled.

Did WoW Forever beat WoW Classic's Twitch record?

Not based on the figures currently being cited. The reported Forever launch-window peak of 1,108,474 is about 26,700 viewers below TwitchTracker's WoW record of 1,135,186.

When did WoW Forever launch?

WoW Forever launched globally on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST, which was midnight on November 5 in Central European Time.

Final Thoughts

WoW Forever's first day is a much better story than 'servers exploded and nobody could play.'

The audience showed up. The World of Warcraft Twitch category came frighteningly close to its all-time record. The servers mostly stayed usable.

Then the smaller, more interesting problems started appearing: overly aggressive layering, broken transport, unavailable vendors, quest bottlenecks, controller quirks and an Auction House rule that might not even be intentional.

That is a launch I can live with.

The one thing I would avoid is declaring victory after 24 hours.

Forever is supposed to last for years. Its success will not be measured by launch-night viewership alone. It will be measured by how many players are still arguing over Blackrock Depths routes, profession prices and raid loot when the first major update arrives.

For now, though, Azeroth is very crowded. Even when layering occasionally makes it look like it is not.
