WoW Forever Beginner Guide - Everything New Players Need to Know Before Launch
Dariz · 11/2/2026
World of Warcraft is a strange game to explain to somebody in 2026.
There is modern WoW. There is Classic. There are anniversary versions, seasonal versions, Remix experiments, Hardcore, and now World of Warcraft: Forever - a permanent level-60 version of Azeroth that starts from the original world and then deliberately heads in a different direction.
If you have never played WoW, that menu can look like somebody asked a raid leader to design a streaming service.
The good news is that Forever itself is surprisingly easy to understand once you are actually inside it. You start at level 1, pick a faction, race and class, quest through Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor, learn your abilities from trainers, run five-player dungeons, level professions, meet people, and eventually reach level 60. The new systems sit around that familiar core rather than replacing it.
This is the guide I would give to a friend before launch. It covers the official basics Blizzard just published, but also the questions an actual new or returning player is likely to have after the login screen disappears.
Quick answer:
WoW Forever is included with a normal World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. It launches globally November 4 at 23:00 UTC, has a level cap of 60, nine classes, new race/class combinations, four launch Rulesets, more than 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons and three raids opening December 9. You do not need to buy a separate expansion to play Forever.
What Exactly Is World of Warcraft: Forever?
WoW Forever is not a temporary season and it is not simply Classic Era with a few extra quests.
Blizzard describes it as a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW, built from the original level 1-60 Azeroth but expanded with new stories, zones, dungeons, systems and future updates.
The story begins in the early "Year 1" period of World of Warcraft, before later expansion events reshape the world. That gives Blizzard room to explore places and ideas that could have existed inside the original era without needing to march directly through The Burning Crusade, Northrend and every expansion that followed.
At launch, the biggest additions include Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas, the Riverglades and Zephras Isle, plus more than 1,000 new quests spread across the 1-60 journey.

WoW Forever Release Time - When Can You Actually Play?
- UTC — Launch time: 23:00 — Local date: November 4
- United Kingdom — Launch time: 23:00 GMT — Local date: November 4
- Central Europe — Launch time: 00:00 CET — Local date: November 5
- North America West — Launch time: 3:00 p.m. PST — Local date: November 4
Blizzard is calling it a global November 4 launch because the game opens at one worldwide moment. The calendar date becomes November 5 in Central Europe and parts of Asia because of time zones.
The beta is already over, so if you are installing now, make sure you select the live World of Warcraft: Forever game version rather than looking for the old beta client.
Do You Need to Buy WoW Forever?
No separate expansion purchase is required.
Blizzard's current starter guide says World of Warcraft: Forever is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.
That is the most important distinction for somebody staring at the Heroic and Epic upgrade pages. Those paid bundles are optional extras, not an entry ticket to the base game.
The major exception is Skyborne access. Creating the new Skyborne race and starting on Zephras Isle requires the Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade.
New-player recommendation:
If you only want to try Forever, start with normal Game Time. Do not buy an upgrade because you think it is required. Upgrade later if you specifically want Skyborne or the bundle extras.
Classic or Enhanced? Choose Your Experience Preset
The first new decision Forever puts in front of you is not your race or class. It is your Experience Preset.
This sounds more permanent than it is. The preset mostly chooses sensible starting settings, and you can change the individual options afterward.
- Classic — What it starts with: SD character models, fewer map/objective hints, separate bags, Transmog off, Classic-style UI layout — Who I would recommend it to: Returning Vanilla/Classic players who actively want the older presentation.
- Enhanced — What it starts with: HD models, quest objective areas, one-bag mode, Transmog on, modern movement defaults, centralized UI — Who I would recommend it to: Most genuinely new players and anyone who does not enjoy fighting the interface.
Blizzard itself recommends Enhanced if you are unsure, and I agree.
Starting with modern conveniences does not stop Forever from being a slower, exploration-focused game. It simply means you spend less of your first hour wondering why your bags are four separate windows.
Choose Your Ruleset Carefully
Forever replaces the traditional realm list with Rulesets. Think of each Ruleset as a large player ecosystem built around a style of play rather than one individual server name.
- Normal — What it means: Open-world PvP is optional. — Best for: New players, PvE-focused players and groups that do not want surprise world-PvP fights.
- PvP — What it means: You are at risk of attack from the opposing faction through much of the open world. — Best for: Players who genuinely enjoy world PvP, not players who merely like the idea of it.
- Roleplay — What it means: Roleplaying community with stricter naming and behavior expectations. — Best for: Players who want character immersion and a more RP-focused social environment.
- Roleplay-PvP — What it means: Roleplay conventions plus open-world faction conflict. — Best for: Players who want both RP culture and PvP danger.
- Hardcore — What it means: Coming after launch; death carries lasting consequences. — Best for: Experienced players who deliberately want permadeath-style stakes.
The most important social rule is easy to miss: characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons and raid only with players on the same Ruleset and faction.
If you have friends, decide both faction and Ruleset before everybody creates a character. "I picked PvP because it sounded cool" is a bad reason to discover your entire friend group is on Normal.
If you are starting alone and genuinely do not know, Normal is the safest choice.
Our WoW Forever Name Reservation guide also explains Rulesets, the three-character reservation cap and the new naming system.
How Character Names Work in WoW Forever
Forever uses two-part character names.
You choose a main name and a secondary name, and the complete combination must be unique within your region. That means somebody else using your preferred first name does not automatically block you as long as your full combination is different.
You can hide the secondary name on your world nameplate in the settings, although it still appears in chat because it remains part of your character's identity.
For roleplayers, this is great. For players who have used the same one-word handle for twenty years, it is going to feel weird for about fifteen minutes.
Which Race and Class Should a New Player Pick?
Pick the class you want to play for hundreds of hours, not the class a pre-launch spreadsheet says is two percent ahead.
Forever launches with nine classes: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior. There are no Death Knights, Monks, Demon Hunters or Evokers at launch.
The familiar Classic races also gain several new combinations: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. Paladin and Shaman are therefore no longer strictly faction-locked.
Skyborne are the new playable race. Both faction versions can play Druid, Hunter, Rogue and Warrior; Alliance-aligned Skyborne can also be Mage, while Horde-aligned Skyborne can also be Shaman.
For the complete matrix, use our WoW Forever Races & Classes Guide.
Simple Class Recommendations for First-Time Players
- Easy solo questing — Start by looking at...: Hunter or Warlock — Why: Pets absorb pressure and both classes handle imperfect pulls well.
- A tank — Start by looking at...: Warrior, Paladin or Druid — Why: All provide real tank paths, with very different class fantasies.
- A healer — Start by looking at...: Priest, Shaman, Druid or Paladin — Why: Choose based on whether you want a dedicated healer or a flexible hybrid.
- Ranged magic DPS — Start by looking at...: Mage or Warlock — Why: Clear caster identities without also asking you to manage tank/healer roles.
- Flexible roles — Start by looking at...: Paladin, Druid or Shaman — Why: You can change your job later without rerolling the entire character.
- Stealth and PvP control — Start by looking at...: Rogue — Why: Strong identity, but less forgiving than a pet class for a first solo character.
If you want a more detailed pre-launch comparison, see our WoW Forever Class Tier List. For pure 1-60 efficiency, use the WoW Forever Leveling Tier List.
You can also experiment before launch in the WoW Forever Talent Calculator.
Do Not Obsess Over the Perfect Build at Level 10
New players often search for the "best build" before they know what half their buttons do.
That is backwards.
Read your abilities, spend talent points on things you understand, and notice what actually changes your gameplay. A build guide is most useful once you have enough context to understand why it recommends something.
Forever deliberately keeps class identity and trade-offs stronger than modern WoW. That means your class can have weaknesses, and that is not necessarily a balance bug.
Leveling 1-60: Slow Down More Than You Think
Forever is not designed around rushing through leveling as disposable pre-endgame content.
The journey is one of the main products.
You will train abilities, travel across large zones, collect flight paths, manage bag space, buy food and drink, decide whether a dangerous cave is worth entering alone, and occasionally discover that the "one more mob" you pulled has three friends.
Blizzard has added more than 1,000 quests to the reimagined world, including new areas that sit inside the normal 1-60 route rather than only at the cap.
Skyborne begin on Zephras Isle from levels 1-12. Later, new adventures can take you into the Riverglades, Shen'dralas and Mount Hyjal alongside familiar Classic zones.
Ten Leveling Habits That Will Save You Time
- Bind your Hearthstone somewhere useful instead of leaving it at the first inn forever.
- Click every flight master you pass. Future-you will be grateful.
- Carry food and drink appropriate to your level, especially on mana classes.
- Train new class abilities regularly. Forever still expects you to visit class trainers.
- Buy larger bags when the cost stops hurting more than the inventory problem.
- Vendor gray items. Blizzard explicitly notes they have no further use.
- Do not assume every blue item is an upgrade; weapon type, armor type and useful stats matter.
- Group for difficult quests instead of turning every elite into a personal moral test.
- Save some gold for training and travel instead of buying every tempting Auction House upgrade.
- Try a different class early if your first one feels wrong. Level 12 is cheaper than regret at level 52.
Quest Tracking: Classic Flavor Does Not Mean Zero Guidance
Tracked quests can show objectives on your interface, and the world map can display quest markers and objective areas depending on your settings and Experience Preset.
Press L for the Quest Log and M for the map. If the tracker becomes a wall of text, untrack the quests you are not actively doing.
My advice is to read at least the opening and closing quest text in new Forever zones. Blizzard has added a lot of content specifically because it wants the world itself to matter. Turning every quest into a GPS marker is a perfectly valid way to level, but it also skips some of the reason Forever exists.
Combat Basics: Learn One Pull Before Learning a Rotation
Your action bars fill up quickly, but you do not need a thirty-button opener on your first boar.
Put your most-used abilities somewhere comfortable. Read the tooltip. Learn what resource your class uses. Understand your defensive ability before you are at five percent health.
For the first levels, pull one enemy at a time until you know what your character can survive. Then start getting greedy like the rest of us.
If you die, you can run back from a graveyard and resurrect near your corpse. A Spirit Healer can resurrect you at the graveyard, but that comes with equipment durability damage and may apply Resurrection Sickness, so corpse-running is normally preferable.
Gear, Bags and Gold - The Beginner Mistakes That Actually Hurt
Classic-style WoW makes small economic decisions matter more than modern Retail.
A bigger bag is valuable. Class training costs money. Profession recipes cost money. Travel costs money. Repairing gear costs money.
The easiest mistake is spending all your gold on a weapon upgrade that becomes obsolete two levels later and then discovering you cannot train a core ability.
Use quest rewards and dungeon drops first. Buy from the Auction House when the upgrade is meaningful, not because the item name is blue.
Professions: Pick Something That Helps Your First Character
Each character can learn two primary professions and all three secondary professions: Cooking, Fishing and First Aid.
For a first character, I prefer simple profession pairs that support the leveling journey rather than an endgame min-max setup you cannot afford yet.
- Warrior / Paladin — Easy first profession pair: Mining + Blacksmithing — Why: You gather the ore used for your own weapons and armor.
- Druid / Hunter / Rogue / Shaman — Easy first profession pair: Skinning + Leatherworking — Why: Normal questing supplies much of the leather you need.
- Mage / Priest / Warlock — Easy first profession pair: Tailoring + Enchanting — Why: Cloth drops naturally and Tailoring does not consume a gathering slot.
- Gold-focused first alt — Easy first profession pair: Two gathering professions — Why: Low setup cost and strong demand on a fresh economy.
For endgame value and gold-making trade-offs, read our WoW Forever Profession Tier List.
Camping: Why Professions Matter Even When You Are Not Crafting
Camping is one of Forever's most distinct new social systems.
Cooking's Basic Campfire creates a shared campsite. Nearby players can contribute profession-made Camp Features, with up to three special objects at a basic camp and one contribution per player.
Spend time at the camp and you can gain profession-linked benefits, use utilities and naturally meet other players who are stopping on the same road.
The important balance rule is that many camp buffs are alternatives to class buffs rather than extra bonuses stacked on top. The idea is to make professions socially useful without making every raid demand nine mandatory camp objects.
If you are completely new, do not worry about optimizing Camp Features on day one. Learn Cooking, make a campfire, and understand the system when you actually encounter the profession recipes.
Legacy System: Progress Beyond Gear
Forever also adds an account-wide Legacy system built around horizontal progression.
The point is to reward exploring the game, completing challenges, professions and other long-term goals rather than making character power only about replacing your equipment every patch.
Blizzard specifically says you can benefit without leveling an army of alts. All character advantages can be unlocked on a single character, even though the system also gives completionists reasons to experience more classes and professions.
For a new player, the best way to think about Legacy is simple: it is a long-term account system. You do not need to optimize it before you know where Ironforge is.
Dungeons: Five Players, Clear Roles, Nine New Adventures
A typical dungeon group has one tank, one healer and three damage dealers.
Forever adds nine new five-player dungeons across levels 13-60 in addition to the broader dungeon ecosystem of old Azeroth.
- Hall of Thanes — Level range: 13-18 — Region: Dun Morogh
- Ruins of Lordaeron — Level range: 15-20 — Region: Tirisfal Glades
- Excavation Site — Level range: 24-29 — Region: Wetlands
- City of Dalaran — Level range: 28-33 — Region: Alterac Mountains
- The Drowned City — Level range: 35-40 — Region: Stranglethorn coast
- Krol'dok Stronghold — Level range: 40-45 — Region: Riverglades
- Alcaz Prison — Level range: 48-53 — Region: Dustwallow Marsh
- Blackmaw Hold — Level range: 55-60 — Region: Azshara
- Shaper's Terrace — Level range: 58-60 — Region: Un'Goro Crater
If it is your first dungeon, tell the group. Most normal people would rather know than discover halfway through the first boss that you have never seen a threat meter in your life.
Tanks set the pace, healers keep people alive, and DPS should generally attack the tank's target instead of opening a second war on the other side of the room.
Raids Do Not Open on Launch Day
You do not need to reach 60 on November 4 because a raid is waiting the next morning.
The first raids unlock December 9, giving players more than a month to level, gear, learn professions and build communities.
- Barrow Deeps — Size: 10 players — What to know: Eight-boss level-60 raid beneath Mount Hyjal.
- Hyjal Summit — Size: 20 players — What to know: Large level-60 raid around the summit of Mount Hyjal.
- Onyxia's Lair — Size: 40 players — What to know: Classic-style 40-player raid; entry requires the Drakefire Amulet attunement.
For a new player, that is healthy pacing. Your first goal is not "be raid-ready in 36 hours." Your first goal is to learn your class and find people you enjoy playing with.
PvP in WoW Forever
PvP exists both as open-world conflict on the PvP rulesets and through organized battleground content.
Forever adds the Darkspear Islands, a new 15v15 battleground for levels 30-60. Teams fight over four capture points and a central flag, with the first side to 2,000 points winning.
There is also a refreshed PvP progression system with Honor, Rank points, PvP quests and seasonal goals.
If you are completely new to WoW, I would not choose the PvP Ruleset merely because you think PvP sounds exciting. Battlegrounds let you learn PvP without making every quest hub a potential ambush.
Addons: You Do Not Need 25 of Them on Day One
Forever supports addons, but it uses the modern WoW UI architecture and modern restrictions on protected combat information.
That matters especially to returning players who expect to copy an old WeakAuras folder and rebuild their entire Retail interface. Current Forever restrictions do not support WeakAuras in the old sense, and some combat automation/information access is intentionally limited.
The base game now covers more of the jobs that previously required addons, including a Cooldown Manager, built-in Damage Meter, Swing Timer, Click Casting and Edit Mode.
Quality-of-life addons are still useful. Questing, bags, maps, Auction House tools and coordinates are the safest categories to think about first.
Our Best WoW Forever Addons guide recommends a simple starter setup: Questie, Leatrix Plus, Bagnon and TomTom, with Auctionator if you care about gold and professions.
Best beginner addon advice:
Play the default UI for an hour before installing ten addons. Fix problems you actually have instead of recreating somebody else's interface.
Controller Support Is Real - But Still Marked Beta
You can play Forever on Windows or Mac with keyboard and mouse, and Blizzard's new-player guide also confirms controller support.
The important detail is that gamepad support is still described as being in a beta state at launch.
Forever has received much deeper controller work than a simple button mapper, including controller-specific action bars, targeting behavior, party/raid frame navigation and support for more UI windows.
We break down the current gamepad features - and what they may mean for a future Xbox or PlayStation version - in our WoW Forever Controller Support & Console Future article.
For a completely new MMO player, keyboard and mouse is still the easiest setup to find guides and community help for. If you already prefer a controller, there is finally a serious native path to use one.
Accessibility and UI Settings Are Worth Five Minutes
Do not treat interface configuration as something only competitive players do.
Open Options and look through action bars, nameplates, chat, audio, graphics, accessibility and keybindings. Increase text or UI scale if you are squinting. Move important elements if your eyes keep traveling across the entire monitor. Turn on features that make objectives readable.
A bad interface makes a new game feel harder than it actually is.
What Should You Do in Your First Two Hours?
If I were starting Forever for the first time, this would be my order:
- Choose Enhanced unless you specifically want the old-school presentation.
- Pick the same Ruleset and faction as your friends before doing anything else.
- Choose a class fantasy you actually like; do not chase a tiny pre-launch balance advantage.
- Set up your keybinds or controller before muscle memory forms around bad defaults.
- Quest normally and read enough tooltips to understand your resource and defensive buttons.
- Learn every flight path you pass and bind your Hearthstone somewhere useful.
- Buy or craft better bags when inventory starts becoming annoying.
- Train two primary professions only when you have a rough idea what materials you keep finding.
- Try a dungeon when you reach the right level instead of waiting until 60 to learn group play.
- Join a guild or at least talk to people. Forever is deliberately built to reward community more than anonymous queue-hopping.
What I Would Not Worry About on Day One
- Your final level-60 raid build.
- A perfect racial tier list.
- Buying every profession recipe immediately.
- Getting every addon your favorite streamer uses.
- Reaching level 60 before everyone else.
- Preparing raid consumables for content that does not open until December 9.
The easiest way to ruin a new MMO is to turn it into a job before you know whether you enjoy the combat.
WoW Forever vs Classic vs Retail - Which Should a New Player Choose?
- WoW Forever — Choose it if...: You want a fresh, permanent level-60 Azeroth with new content built on Classic-style foundations. — Main difference: Slower world-focused progression with new quests, classes, systems and future expansions of original Azeroth.
- Classic / Anniversary — Choose it if...: You specifically want Blizzard's recreation/progression of older historical WoW versions. — Main difference: More faithful to the original expansion progression and rules of that era.
- Modern WoW — Choose it if...: You want the current expansion, fastest modern systems and contemporary endgame design. — Main difference: Much more streamlined leveling and a heavily developed modern endgame ecosystem.
There is no objectively correct version.
Forever is especially appealing if you want your first character to feel like a journey through a persistent world instead of a tutorial you finish before the "real game" starts.
WoW Forever Beginner FAQ

Skyborne are the new playable race. They can join either faction and start on Zephras Isle, but access requires the Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade.
Final Thoughts
The official WoW Forever starter guide is intentionally basic. That is probably the right choice for somebody who has literally never equipped a sword in WoW.
But the most useful beginner advice is not a list of keyboard shortcuts.
It is understanding which decisions matter and which ones do not.
Your Ruleset and faction matter because they decide who you can actually play with. Your class matters because you will spend hundreds of hours using those abilities. Your professions matter, but they can change. Your talent build matters, but it does not need to be perfect at level 14. Your leveling speed matters only if racing is the part you enjoy.
Forever is launching with a lot of systems, but none of them require you to solve the entire game before November 4.
Create a character you like, learn the world, talk to people, and let the first bad cave pull teach you the same lesson WoW has been teaching new players for more than twenty years: there was definitely another mob behind you.
